TEL AVIV (JTA)—A mas-

in the Negev has been sub-
mitted to the Knesset by a
voluntary group headed by
Yosef Tekoah, Ben-Gurion
University president and
former Ambassador to the
UN, and Eli Moyal, Deputy
Minister of Commu-
nications.
The plan, the target date
for which is the year 2000,

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Sephardic Chief Rabbi
Ovadia Yosef has issued a
warning to all Jews to
steer clear of guru-
worship and transcen-
dental meditation.
In a statement issued
on Purim, the chief rabbi
urged fathers and
educators to ensure that
young people did-not fall
for the blandishments of
propagators of these
faiths "which smack of
idolatry."

"BUY CHRISTIAN" IN U.S.: Two major Jewish organ-
izations engaged in combatting anti-Semitism and in fight-
ing discrimination—the American Jewish Committee and
the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith—are greatly per-
turbed over the spread of "Buy Christian" activities in var-
ious parts of the country.
The "Buy Christian" directories and yellow pages
avoid any mention of boycotting Jews. They only empha-
size that "true Christians" must patronize Christian enter-
prises. Each advertiser in the Christian Business Direc-
tories in required to sign testimony that acknowledges
Jesus as the Son of God." The publishers of the Christian
Yellow Pages indicate that their directories "offer an an-
swer" not only to those who seek to patronize Christian
business enterprises, but also to those who want to know
where to find a Christian attorney, a Christian doctor, a
Christian insurance agent, a Christian travel agency.
JEWISH CONCERN: The American Jewish Com-
mittee especially is concerned over the fact that the "Buy
Christian" directories find support among "ultra-conserva-
tive" elements in the Evangelicals, as is the case now in
Tucson and Phoenix, where the local Associations of Evan-
gelicals have endorsed the local exclusionary directories.
Leaders of the American Jewish Committee in various
parts of the country have been asked about the effect local-
ly of the "Buy Christian" campaigns in their communities.
The Anti-Defamation League fears that the "Buy Chris-
tian" campaign, although avoiding anti-Semitic motiva-
tions openly, may lead to results that could be "dis-
astrous" to Jews in terms of community relations. The pos-
sibility of bringing legal action against the "Buy Chris-
tian" directories on grounds of religious discrimination is
therefore being studied now in the ADL national headquar-
ters.
The American Jewish Committee has long been con-
cerned over the tendencies among the right-wing Evangeli-
cals who last year promoted the election of "real Chris-
tians only" in some 30 Congressional and state legislative
campaigns, their declared purpose being to elect a "Chris-
tian Congress" and to establish America was a "Christian
Republic."
PROTESTS IGNORED: The groups publishing the
Christian Yellow Pages and the Christian Business Direc-
tories are aware of the concerns they are provoking
among Jews. However, their leaders declare openly that
they are ignoring Jewish protests. They claim that Chris-
tians are doing nothing wrong by encouraging other Chris-
tians "to follow Christ's example" in transacting their per-
sonal business "within the body of Christ." -

BALTIMORE (JTA)-
Maryland Attorney General
Francis B. Burch has found
that the Bethesda Country
Club outside of Washington
has discriminated against
Jews. His finding an-
nounced last week also said
the club has discriminatory
procedures that operated to
keep out Blacks.
Unless the club changes
its practices it will risky
eventual loss of a major
duction in property taxes
that Maryland gives to coun-
try clubs.
Burch's 15-month in-
vestigation began after the
Maryland Legislature
passed an amendment to
the law allowing tax breaks
for country clubs which re-
quired an end to discrimina-
tion or a loss of the tax
break. The 1974 amendment
mandated investigation of
the clubs.
