Local Suit Focuses
.on Religious Bias

The Michigan Depart-
ment of Civil Rights has
charged Continental Can
Co. with unlawful dis-
crimination on the basis
of religion. The complaint
stems from the discharge
of Randy Kline, a Three

day shift to the night
shift. The claimant's re-
ligion forbids working on
its Sabbath, observed be-
tween the hours of sun-
down Friday and sun-
down Saturday. Kline re-
ceived three suspensions
for refusing to work after
sundown and was sub-
sequently discharged.
The charge was issued
when conciliation failed
.to resolve the complaint.
If it is upheld following
the public hearing, com-
pany officials will be di-
rected to take corrective
action, which could in-
cludIrWTenioval of- all
references to Kline's sus-
pensions and discharge
from his employment re-
cord and the payment of
money that Kline would
have earned had he not
been unlawfully dis-
criminated .against.
