on the Sabbath. Con-
sequently, Israeli soccer
matches in Jerusalem are
held in two 7,000-seat-

The question is raised
why must the soccer
games in Jerusalem • be
played on Saturday if the
NRP is going to make such
a to do about it? A schedule
could be arranged in such
a way that the Jerusalem
teams, since they play on
Saturday, should play all
their away games on Sat-
ruday and arrange to play
their home games on
Wednesday nights or
Saturday nights at He-
brew University, where
lights could be installed
much cheaper than an out-
lay of IL 70 million.
With most of the coun-
try obviously non-
observant, it is very easy
for the sports pro-
grammers to run their
games on Saturday in the
large cities. The soccer
games in the National
League are always
played on Saturday,
whereas the interna-
tional games are played
in middle of the week in
the Ramat Gan stadium

Years ago • when Ben-

he arranged for the Na-

games on other than a
Saturday with the un-
derstanding that the
existing leaders would
pay a few English Pounds
to the teams. This con-
tinued for a few weeks
and then the Pounds be-
came scarce and were not
paid, so soccer games re-

Saturday, and that has
been the custom ever
since.
The irony in Israel's
sports program is that
when the basketball and
soccer teams go abroad to
play, it is written into
their contacts they can-
not play Friday night or
Saturday.
