HEBREW IN HIGH SCHOOLS: The teaching of
the Hebrew language in American secondary schools
was introduced more than 35 years ago. Ten years ago
it was included in the language programs of 71 secon-
dary schools in 12 American cities. Today, the number
of students enrolled in the Hebrew classes in New
York's junior and senior high schools is only 1,284,
according to Board of Education data. Last year alone
there was a 25 percent drop in the Hebrew language
classes in the senior high schools and a 19 percent drop
in the junior high schools.
One of the reasons of the decline in the Hebrew
enrollment is the elimination of the foreign language
requirement for graduation from high school.
The current municipal financial crisis has also
greatly contributed to the curtailment of the Hebrew
Language Program in the New York high school sys-
tem. Some high school principals — many of them,
unfortunately, Jewish — have always obstructed the
introduction of Hebrew instruction in their schools.
Many parents and children are not aware now
that Hebrew was being offered in high schools. This is
because Hebrew is not being listed in the schools as a
separate choice along with French, Spanish and Ita-
lian.
PARENTS' INDIFFERENCE: Although a good
part of the blame for the decline of Hebrew in the high
school system is laid on principals unfriendly toward
having Hebrew in their curriculum, many Jewish pa-
rents who send their children to public high schools
are similarly to be blamed. They simply have no in-
terest in securing Jewish education for their children.
During the Hebrew Language Week a campaign
Will be conducted by the Board of Jewish Education of
Greater New York emphasizing that a number of op-
tions are open to parents, community leaders, school
administrators, lay and professional organizations
who wish to see the teaching of Hebrew maintained
and strengthened in the public high schools. More
than-1400 American colleges and universities now ac-
cept Hebrew for entrance credit on a par with other
foreign languages.
JERUSALEM — Young
eye doctors from develop-
ing countries . are now
completing a two year
diploma course in
ophthalmology at the
Hebrew University-Ha-
dassah Medical School.
The participants have
been taught theoretical
and practical aspects of
ophthalmology. They
have attended lectures by
instructors of the
ophthalmology depart-
ment of the medical
school as well as by guest
teachers, and have inte-
grated into a specializa-
tion program in ophthal-
mology at the
Hadassah-Hebrew Uni-
versity Hospital.
After final exam-
inations, which will take
place during the next few
weeks, they will receive
the diploma of ophthal-
mology from the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem,
and return to their home
countries as specialists in
various fields.

THE HEBREW WEEK: Jewish educators feel that
unless something drastic is done to arouse the Jewish
community to, save and strengthen Hebrew studies in
city high schools, the day may come when there will be
no survivors to save.
Aware of thiS faCt, the New - Y-Ork City Board of
Education — in cooperation with the Board of Jewish
Education of Greater New York — has declared a Heb-
rew Language Week to promote the study of Hebrew
in public schools. The Hebrew Week starting Sun-
day — will be modeled after Italian and French Lan-
guage Weeks.
