'Detroit Needs
Jewish Chaplain'

. HOLLYWOOD, Florida
— Joseph Adler, retired
executive chief of the De-
troit Fire Dept. and
former fire commissioner
of Warren, Mich., now re-
siding in Florida, has
written to Melvin Jeffer-
son, Detroit fire commis-
sioner, expressing dis-
may that of the 11 chap-
lains of various faiths ap-
pointed to the Detroit fire
department, a Jewish
chaplain was not in-
cluded.
"I realize there are
very few Jewish firemen
(if any) in the Detroit fire
department," Adler
writes. "Nevertheless,
there should be a Jewish
chaplain in the depart-
ment even if there is one
Jewish fireman."
Adler points out that
New York and Chicago
have Jewish fire chap-
lains, and he suggests
that Rabbis Fram and
Syme of Temple Israel in
Detroit be asked to serve.
