salad, tarama (caviar
salad), sageki (yogurt,
cucumbers, garlic), skor-
dalia (mashed potatoes,
mashed garlic, olive oil,
lemon) and grape leaves
stuffed with ground lamb
and rice.
Naturally a Greek
salad ... crisp lettuce,
tomatoes, hot peppers,
black olives, wonderful
goat's milk cheese (feta),
beets and Yassbo's very
fine special house dres-
sing ... It did not, like
many restaurant salads,
just lie there looking at
you ... It fairly leaped
onto your fork.
Of course, also a cup of
chicken lemon soup with
rice ... so good it tan-
talized our taste buds. -
Then a bottle of Domes-
tica Greek light white
wine.
FOR THE ENTREE,
Terry brought a combina-
tion plate containing many
tasty gems served at Yas-
soo ... broiled baby lamb
chops that can only be de-
scribed with one word —
elegant! ... delicious
mousaka, spanakotiropita
(spinach cheese pie), shish
kebab, stuffed grape
leaves, cooked rice with
tomato sauce, Greek meat
balls and green beans in
tomato sauce.
Now a glass of May-
rodaphne sweet red wine.
A cup of Greek coffee,
most interesting when
someone is around who
can read coffee grounds,
and dessert of
galatobouriko, a fluffly
pastry of literally a
thousand tissue-thin
layers filled with custard.
The full flavor of the
wines we had were best
enjoyed with the foods of
its native land and when
accompanying them, they
all seemed to come to life.
As we looked around,
the beauty of Yassoo
Greek Village remained a
vision in front of us ...
Here was the former
Roman Gate transformed
into the decor of another
country ... The upstairs,
seating112, plus 28 in the
bar, is 'modeled like a
Greek village with five
shops within it ... Each
"shop" is a separated re-
staurant area . . . Plus the
well-arranged tables,
there are comfortable
high backed booths
men waiters, with Terry
the only one we could see
without an apron ... Pete
didn't have one on, but
owner Don Nick, who was
home battling the flu, re-
tains the old world at-
mosphere by. wearing one
also ... Stained glass
with Greek warriors ...

FAMOUS BIG TYME SANDWICHES

CHOOSE FROM

10 HAMBURGER GREATS

By DANNY RASKIN

THE NAME "YAS-
SOO - can mean many
things ... as a salutation,
toast or goodbye . . . but to
people who have disco-
vered the new Yassoo
Greek Village on Wood-
ward, just south of 14
Mile in Royal Oak, it can
only stand for one ... all
around excellence.
Small wonder that so
many people are talking
about Yassoo Greek Vil-
lage ... It's better than
anything Greektown on
Monroe ever had to offer
— even in its heyday.
From smiling, pleasant,
efficient hostess Karen
Siterlet greeting people
at the door, on down the
line, service is a high at-
tribute here ... Our wai-
ter, Terry Antaziklias, is
one of the finest super
waiters of our area .
Many folks krlow him
from four fine Italian
eateries he has worked at,
plus a couple of other top
spots ... Yassoo is his
second Greek restaurant
experience.
Pete Peponis, general
manager, who practically
everyone took as being Ita-
lian, always worked in Ita-
lian dining ... He and
Terry are a couple of
Greeks who know home
country cooking ... and
this is what wife Frieda
and ourselves had.
We were started off
with sagnaki, a flaming
cheese appetizer into
which you joyfully swirl
Greek bread . . . Then
came a bottle of Castel
Danielis Greek imported
red wine ... The ap-
petizer plate Terry
brought us was a bevy of
goodness ... eggplant
