Carter Greets Rabin With Cheerful Messages for Israel

Cheerful messages for Israel were emphasized in President
Jimmy Carter's re-affirmation of historic American policies of
friendship for the. Jewish state in his greetings to Israel Prime
in this week.
Minister Yitzhak Rab
At the White House dinner for Rabin Monday evening Carter
said, "We understand very clearly in our own country — strong and
powerful and secure —that security is important, and is the essence
of what Israel can expect from us and from the rest of the world — a

recognition of their existence now and in the future."
"As long as I have any influence on our own.government, as long
as these other gentlemen from our government (the American offi-
cials at the dinner) have any influence, that recognition and that
strength and that friendship and that sense of mutual purpose will
never waver," Carter declared.

ADL Attacks Publication
of 'Buy Christian' Lists

NEW YORK — The Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith
has uncovered a new twist in religious discrimination — "buy
•Christian" business directories. '
According to an ADL fact-finding report, more than a million
copies of two separate publications, "Christian Yellow Pages"
and "Christian Business Directory," are being distributed in 18
cities, with additional outlets planned. The publications are re-
stricted to Christian advertisers and urge readers to buy in
Christian-owned stores. "Christian Yellow Pages" is limited to
"born-again" Christians, thereby excluding Catholics and most
Protestant denominations, in addition to Jews and other non-
Christians.
Arnold Forster, ADL's general counsel, said that the agency is
researching the possibility of bringing legal action against the "buy
Christian- directories on grounds of discrimination.
The ADL report, prepared by Irwin Suall, director of the ADL
fact-finding department, points out that promoting preferential
buying based on the Christian religious beliefs of business own-
ers is harmful to firms whose owners believe differently and to
community relations in general. Furthermore, the report warns,
the religious discrimination inherent in the business directories
will "almost certainly" spill over into other - areas-of public life
such as voting practices, housing and employment.
"Christian Yellow Pages" (CYP), an unincorporated com-
mercial enterprise, is patterned after telephone company yellow
pages, and in some instances, uses the same advertisements.
According to the Southern Bell telephone company, the term
"yellow pages" is not and cannot - be copyrighted. However, the
ADL report notes, "Christian Yellow Pages" filed an application
in the .U.S. Trademark Office in October, 1975, to register the
name as a service mark.
CYP directories are currently distributed free through
churches and religious bookstores in Fresno, Oakland-Richmond,
San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento and Stannous County,
Calif.; in Portland, Ore.; Dallas and Fort Worth, Tex.; Miami-
Dade County and Broward County, Fla., and Atlanta, Ga. Other

NEW YORK — The
Black-Jewish Information
Center reports that 27
black African nations have
extensive trade -relations
with Israel.
The report stated that in
1975, - Israel and her black
African trading partners
did $66,422,000 in business
— an increase of 16 percent
over 1974.
Of the total, $26.6 million
represented black African

million represented Israel
exports to black Africa.

More than 50 employees and visitors who were in the Bnai Brith national headquar-
ters building in Washington before noon on Wednesday are believed to be held as
hostages by the fanatical, black Hanafi sect of Muslims.
Hundreds of panicked relatives of hostages lined the blocks surYounding the Bnal-,-

speedy release. - •
As this issue goes to press at noon Thursday, the outcome ofthe terrorist incidents
involving three buildings remains uncertain. The other two affected areas are the
National Islamic Center and the District of Columbia Building.
The terrorists are members of a 1,000-member sect which split with the rival Black
Muslims. In 1973, five children and two women were slain in a Washington home:
Several Black Muslims were sentenced to a total of 140 years in prison for those slayings,
which included four children of Hanafi leader Hamaas Abdul Khaalis, who led the
terrorist action in Washington.
The terrorists' demands include the banning of the film "Mohammed—Messenger of
God," and the showing of the film was stopped in the middle of a screening in Hollywood
Wednesday night to comply with the demand. The terrorists are algo demanding that the
convicted killers involved in the 1973 slayings be delivered to them.
Because the terrorist group stemming from the Hanafi Muslims commenced their
demands with charges that the Black' Muslims, their bitter enemies, were "financed by
Zionists," protection was provided for all Black and Jewish members of Congress.

Gertrude Levin Clinic Established at WSU

A gift of $250,000 from Mrs. Seema Boesky of Greenwich, Conn. and Mrs. Muriel Slatkin of Beverly
Hills, Calif. will establish the Gertrude Levin Pain Clinic at Wayne State University. Established in
honor of their mother, Gertrude (Mrs. Samuel J.) Levin, the pain clinic -will be located in the University
Clinics Building currently under construction on the WSU medical campus in the Detroit Medical
Center.
The new clinic will be one of the first in the Midwest to study problems related to pain.
In making the gift Mrs. Levin's daughters said that it was their desire that the WSU School of
also encourage the cooperation of other medical institutions and individuals interested in the

research, study and treatment of pain.

Dr. Robert Coye, dean of the WSU School of Medicine, in accepting the gift, said, "Because the nature
of pain is so complex and so baffling most medical researchers have avoided this area of study. And yet pain
is something that all of us experience in varying degrees. This generous gift will enable the WSU School of
Medicine to join the growing numbers of others in seeking to solve the pain mystery.

"The gift," Dean Coye continued, "is also most important to us because it comes from the private
sector. I hope it will encourage other private contributions so that we may devote greater efforts to our
research."
Several disciplines will be involved in the pain clinics studies. Anesthesia, drugs, surgery,
psychotherapy, behaviorism and physical therapy have been used together irk seeking a solution to
pain.
