Ex-Detroiter Earns Acclaim as Musical Conductor in N.Y.



Detroiter
Former
Seymour Lipkin of New
York earned acclaim last
week for his performance
as conductor with the Na-
tional Orchestral Associ-
ation, New York's train-
ing orchestra.
A favorable review of
Lipkin's abilities as a
conductor appeared in
the New York Times, add-
ing to numerable credits
he has gained in past ef-
forts.
The son of Dr. and
Mrs. Ezra (Leah) Lip-
kin of Oak Park, Lipkin
was appointed assistant
to Serge Koussevitsky at
the Berkshire Music
Center in'Tanglewood. He

had studied with the
maestro of the Boston
Synphony and under
George Szell as appren-
tice conductor with the
Cleveland Orchestra.
After Koussevitsky's
death, Leonard Bernstein
was appointed to head the
conducting department at
Tanglewood and Lipkin
stayed on as his assistant.
Subsequently he became
assistant conductor of the
New York Philharmonic
and travelled with the Or-
chestra as Bernstein's as-
sistant during its tour of
the Soviet Union, Europe
and the Near East.

with which he has been
associated since 1966 and
is also music director of
the Long Island Sym-
phony. He has appeared
as guest conductor with
some of the country's
leading symphony or-
chestras, including the
Cleveland Orchestra, the
Detroit Symphony. the

monic.
Lipkin began his career
in music as a pianist,
winning, among other
awards, the
Rachmaninoff Music
Competition in 1948. He
appeared as soloist with
most of the major orches-
tras, but it is as a conduc-
tor that he chooses to oc-
cupy most of his time in
music.

Kormans presented the
Michigan Cancer Found-
aion with a $10,000 gift for
the Suzanne Korman
Morton Memorial Fund.
The fund was estab-
lished by Harry and Anna
Korman to support the
Suzzanne Korman Mor-
ton Cancer Research
Laboratory. The lab was
dedicated in memory of
the Kormans' daughter
who died of cancer in
1975.
