"Jewish Identity and
the JDL" (Princeton Uni-
versity Press) by Janet L.
Dolgin is an adaptation
from a doctoral disserta-
tion and the product of 14
months of research in
New York and Jerusalem.
The author, assistant
professor of anthropology
at Teachers College, Co-
lumbia University, traces
the evolution of the JDL
from its beginning in 1968
when it was known as the
Jewish Defense Corps
through September,_ 1972
when it adopted a
nationalist ideology.
The JDL was founded
by a group of middle aged,
lower income Orthodox
Jews as a protective (in
the physical meaning of
the word) organization.
The group's main con-
cerns then were crime in
the streets, black anti-
Semitism, "liberal do-
nothing city govern-'
ment," and 'changing
neighborhoods. Or as the
author phrased it: "JDL
was created against the
Other." The JDL's field of
operation centered in
Williamsburg, Boro Park-
in Brooklyn, and the
Lower East Side in Man-
hattan. However, within
a short time the league's
concerns shifted from
local to national and in-
ternational in scope.
Among others, they in-
cluded Soviet Jewry and
aliya.
As the league expanded,
its major aim was to create

a New Jew. He was to be
modelled after the heroes
of the Bible, the Mac-
cabees, the Zealots the
men of action.
The JDLers contrasted
the New Jews with the
Old Jews. The latter they
described as people
"without a land, without
a society of their own, and
without the political
sagacity of . self-
interests."
The JDL's "Movement
Handbook" (1972) por-
trays the New Jew in the
historic perspective of the
Holocaust: ". . . a new
philosophy was born as a
New Jew arose from the
mound of corpses of Au-
schwitz, Tremblinka and
BuchenWald. From the
ashes and decay of the
Holocaust comes the phi-
losophy of the Jewish De-
fense League. An organi-
zation of Jews whose
hallmark is action.
Nevertheless, that action
is based upon a philoso-
phy — the philosophy of.
the New Jew."
The author lists five
principles of the New Jew
philosophy:
• Ahavat Yisrael (love
ofJewry). It is the obliga- ,
tion of every Jew to love
all Jews as all Jews belong
to Klal Yisrael (the
Jewish people as a whole).
• Hadar (dignity and
pride). Hadar is pride in
being a Jew, in Jewish
culture &I'd in Jewish his-
tory. It is "a response to
Anti-Semitism which
robs the Jews of first their

AMSTERDAM (JTA) —
As they - have done every
year since their libera-
tion from German occu-
pation, the citizens of
Amsterdam marked the
anniversary of the Feb.
25-26, 1941 general strike
when Dutch workers
tried in vain to halt the
deportation of the first
400 Amsterdam Jews to
Nazi death camps,
The Amsterdam port
workers were credited
with having organized
the protest strike and for
that reason wreaths are
placed every Feb. 25 at
the base of the statue.
But the Dutch Com-
munist Party also claims
credit for having initiated
the 1941 action.
_
This year, in addition to
demands for government
control of multi-national
enterprises and compen-
sation to offset inflation,
they also urged severe
punishment for Pieter
Menten, a Dutch art
dealer accused of having
participated in the mur-
dersofJews and others in
the Lemberg area of Po-
land when he was a
member of an SS unit in
July, 1941. Menten, who
was arrested last year, is
now awaiting trial.
