Haifa Prof Slated to Address
Adat Shalom Encounter Event

Dr. Eugene Weiner,
chairman of the Depart-
ment of Sociology at the
University of Haifa, will
be the scholar-in-
residence at Adat Shalom
Synagogue's Encounter
Weekend to take place
March 11-13. The theme
for the weekend will be
"Living in Crisis — How
Israelis Cope."
This year's program is
the fifth annual' En-
counter Weekend of Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
The highlight of the
weekend will take place
at 9 a.m. Shabat morning
services when Dr. Weiner
will speak on "Social
Stress in Israel: Old Solu-
tions, New Problems."
Following services, a
light luncheon will be
served at which Dr.
Weiner will discuss "New
Emerging Israeli Religi-
ous Symbols,." Luncheon
is free, but reservations
are required by calling
the synagogue office,
851-5100.
On March 11, Dr. Weiner
will address the members
of Adat Shalom's Migdal
Tzion senior United
Synagogue Youth group.
The oneg Shabat will be
held in the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Levy, 5330
Deerfield Village Dr.,
West Bloomfield. Dr.
Weiner will speak on "Is-
raeli and 18."
Dr. Weiner will address
the Men's Club Sunday
Forum 11 a.m. March 13
on "The Ugly Israeli and
Ugly American Jew —
Working Beyond our
Stereotypes." A conti-
nental breakfast will be
served. Men and women
are invited.
Dr. Weiner was or-
dained at the Jewish
Theological Seminary of
America and served on
the semiriary's staff as di-
rector of the Herbert H.
Lehman Institute of
Ethics. He received his
PhD degree in sociology

from Columbia Univer-
sity.

Encounter
Weekend is a project of
the Adult Study Commis-
sion of Adat Shalom.

Lubavitch Send
8,000 Purim Gifts

Michigan
The
Chabad-Lubavitch or-
ganization is distributing
8,000 packages of Shal-
lakh Manot, Purim gifts
of food, during Purim, and
its volunteers are con-
ducting Megilla readings
on the University of
Michigan and Michigan
State University cam-
puses, as well as at pris-
ons at Jackson, Milan,
and the Oakland and
Wayne County jails.
The Lubavitch "Purim
Kits," containing potato
chips, candies, pennies
and an explanation of the
meaning of Purim, are
being distributed by the
organization according to
the instructions of the
Lubavitcher Rebbe to ob-
serve the mitzvot of
Purim — Mishlo'akh
Manot, sending food gifts
to friends, and Mattanos
LaEvyonim, donating to
the needy.

Cantor Harold Orbach
of Temple Israel has been
appointed chairman of
the Cantorial Board of
Alumni Averseers of
Hebrew Union College-
Jewish Institute of Relig-
ion, it was announced by
Dr. Alfred Gottschalk,
president.
A 1952 graduate of the
Hebrew Union College
School of Sacred Music in
New York, Cantor Orbach
also studied at the Jul-
liard School and at the
:Manhattan School of
Music. He holds a master
of arts degree from Tulsa
University and pursued
doctoral studies at Wayne
State University. He is a
past president of the
American Conference of
Cantors.
He has appeared in
concert throughout the
U.S. and in Israel and in
several local television
programs. •
