NEW YORK — The
Anti-Defamation League
of Bnai Brith is "deeply
troubled" by the National
Council of Churches' "re-
cord of insensitivity to
urgent Jewish concerns,"
its "pronounced anti-
Israel prejudice" and its
"lack of moral leader-
ship" in interreligious re-
lations.
According to Burton M.
Joseph, ADL's national
chairman, the ADL has
requested a meeting of
Jewish and interreligious
agencies to consider and
react to the NCC record of
the past decade.
Joseph said the action
was based on the findings -
of an ADL survey of the
NCC record since the 1973
surprise attack on Israel
by Egypt and Syria.
He questioned whether
the anti-Israel, pro-Arab
actions and the apparent
hostility of the NCC gov-
erning board on some mat-
ters of Jewish interest
truly reflect the views of
all its constituent

Canadian Official Says He Is
Unaware of Plan to Oust Nazis

WASHINGTON. (JTA)
— At a press converence
during. Prime Minister
Pierre Trudeau's visit to
Washington, Canadian
Minister of External Af-
fairs Don Jamieson said
on the issue of whether
the Canadian govern-
ment was ferreting out
former Nazis living in
that country, "I know of
no such cases." He said he
was informed that
"some" Nazis might move
CO Canada.
Asked whether Cana-_
dian authorities were in-
vestigating this report,
he said that "seculrity
agencies by design do not.
always advise me in ad-
vance." According to one
recent report, Ar-
chbishop Valerian Trifa,
who has been suspended
from the board of the Na-
tional Council of
Churches, is believed
planning to move to
Canada. Trifa is a former
leader in the fascist
Romanian Iron Guard.

churches or even a sub-
stantial segment of Pro-
testant leadership in the
nation.
Quoting the ADL sur-
vey, Joseph cited the fol-
lowing actions by the
NCC as "disturbing" and
as "reasons for ADL's
Concern:"
• The NCC's call for a
mutual -cessation of
shipment of arms by the
U.S. and Russia to the
belligerants in the Middle
East in October, 1973
when Israel was the vic-
tim of a surprise attack by
Egypt and Syria. The call
for a curtailmant of arms
supplies would have left
Israel helpless, the ADL
said, while_ the Soviet
Union, indifferent to NCC
resolutions, would have
continued to arni. the
Arab aggressors.
• NCC's
pro-Arab,
anti-Israel propaganda
publication, "Swasia,"
which consistently re-
prints articles blatantly
hostile and critical of Is-
rael and Jewish corn-

Rabbi Robert Abramson, Headmaster June Weinberg, Administrator Arlene Tilchin, President

view of the-Palestine Lib-
eration Organization,
Jamieson said "we have
not been in communica-
tion with the PLO." He
said Canadian policy is
"pretty much" like that of
the U.S. with respect to
the terrorist organiza--:
tion.
He said he agrees with
Secretary- of State Cyrus
Vance's position that there
"is no way for Israel to be
prepared to negotiate with
the PLO" as long as the
"PLO declaration stands
to cause the eradication of
Israel." However,
Jamieson said, "the Pales-
tinians must have some
voice in the settlement to
be arrived at. — He said
Canada has not decided on
what "-mechanism" is to be
adopted.
The Canadian official
categorically opposed a
Jackson-Vanik amend-
ment for Canada regard-
ing trade benefits and
Soviet emigratien policy.
"Our positron is that we
will respect United Na-
tions sanctions, but we
ourselves won't stop deal-
ing with a country simply
because we don't like
their postures or policy,"
he said.
He added that he does
not see anyting "re-
motely" resembling the
Jackson-Vanik measure
in a future Canadian law.

munal activity. In what
can only be viewed as a
deliberate affront to the
Jewish community, the
ADL said, "Swasia" has
as one of its editors an av-
owed anti-Zionist, pro-
Palestinian activist- Dr.
Morton Mevinsky.
• The NCC's 'pro-Arab
seminars
throughout
America which regularly
use and recommend books,
films and periodicals hos-
tile to Israel.
• NCC's Middle East
Working Forum in April,
1975
which
"over-
whelmed and snuffed
out" the views of those
participants in the forum
who sought to speak up
for Jewish concerns and
Israel's survival.
• NCC's invitation to
"a notorious American
anti-Semite," Imamu
Baraka (LeRoi Jones), to
address its December,
1972 convention in Dal-
las, despite widespread
protest on the part of
Jewish groups and
others.
Joseph went on to say
that the recent suspen-
sion from the NCC board
of Viorel Trifa by the Or-
thodox Church of
America, an NCC con-
stituent organization, is
an action that should
have been taken long ago
by the NCC itself.
Trifa's linkage to Nazi
atrocities, in his - capacity

as the head of the fascist
Romanian Iron Guard in
World War II, was too long
ignored by the NCC,
Joseph said.
"This lack of moral
leadership is," Joseph
concluded, "symptomatic
of an anti-Israel preju-
dice now plaguing the
present leadership of the
National Council of
Churches."
