Sam Bishop, Led Northwestern
Athletic Department 44 Years
Sam Bishop, who for 44
years was coach and ath-
letic director at
Northwestern High
School, died Saturday at
age 80.
Born in Benton Harbor,
Mr. Bishop was an
athlete in Chicago where
he attended high school,
but had to drop out to
support his widowed
• mother. He later moved
to Benton Harbor where
he received his diploma
and went on to college at
Western State Teacher's
College, now Western
Michigan University.
There he starred as a
football and baseball
ro player.

After getting a coach-
ing job, he continued his
college education and re-
ceived his bachelor's de-
gree from Detroit City
College in 1933 and his
master's degree in 1938
from Wayne State Uni-
versity.

Hired at Northwestern
High in 1924, he put to-
gether his first football
team and spent the next 24
years coaching. Between
1924 and 1947, he coached
his football teams through
181 games with 113 vic-
tories, 52 losses and 16
ties. He won six city
championships, two state
championships and four
West Side championships
as well as track and
baseball titles. He was
Northwestern's athletic
director from 1948 to 1968
when he retired.
Mr. Bishop was in-
ducted into Western
Michigan University's
Hall of Fame in
Kalamazoo in its second
year. He developed a
large number of re-
spected athletes • and
coaches who gained na-
tional prominence in col-
lege and professional
ranks.
Another honor bes-
towed on Mr. Bishop was
the Citizen Sportsman
Award at The Detroit
News' All-State banquet
in 1966. He also was pre-
sented the Golden Key by
five national education
organizations in 1970 in-
Atlantic City.
Among his other
awards are -the Coach of
the Year by Michigan
High School Coaches As-
sociation in 1959 and the
Distinguished Commu-
nity Citizen Award at the
March of Dimes Sports
Award Dinner in 1974.
A leading candidate to
be inducted into Michi-
gan's Hall of Fame in May,
Mr. Bishop was one of the
first coaches to be en-
shrined in Michigan's
Coaches Hall of Fame at
Central Michigan Univer-
sity.
Mr. Bishop was a
member of the Downtown
Synagogue. •
