To the conference in the
Municipal Museum,
marking the end of the
publication, came writers
and artists The Mayor of
Tel Aviv, ShIomo Lahat
expressed his regret
about the folding of the
journal. The Minister for
Defense Shimon Peres,
who had once translated
a story of the Russian
writer Gowakov, spoke
about his love for the
journal. Present were the
former Chief of Staff
Chaim Laskow, the Press
Counciler of the Prime
Minister, Dan Paths and
his wife, Yael, a lecturer
in the Tel Aviv Univer-
sity in Latin, who has
written often in the jour-
nal
Author Oz, who had
been injured severly in a
car accident a few months
ago and had his first pub-
lic appearance again on
this occasion, cited the
words of Ahad Ha'Am on
the closing of the Hebrew
journal, "Hashiloach",
that it was the fate of ex-
cellent literary journals
to be opened with - a bank
and closed silently.
The editor of the journal,
Aharon Amir, thanked his
father, Dov Lipitz, for his
help in publishing the
journal and said that he
had never asked for finan-
cial help from the govern-
ment or other public in-
stitutions. He related that
some editions Of the jour-
nal were dedicated to
literary and social prob-
lems, especially of the
Mediterranean region,
some to theater . and
cinema problems, the last
to the writer Marcel
Proust and the scientist
Dr. Sigmund Freud.
Peres declared that his
sympathy for Amir was
not only for his literary
activity, but also for his
help to the Maronites
(Christian Arabs) in
Lebanon. He had estab-
lished a committee and
helped the Maronites
during the civil war in
Lebanon.
