Making Togetherness: The Zukermans

An old saw about those
working together_ce-
menting unity gained
fascination at an inspired
concert at the Detroit In-

stitute of Arts Tuesday
evening., Eugenia and
Pinchas Zukerman pro-
vided the spirit emanat-
ing from a couple's
musicmaking that gave
status to the duo as well
as to their performances
as individuals.
A capacity audience
acclaimed the Zukermans
and their harmonious
performance that added
glory to the national fame
they attained together
and individually.

appeared in Duo in G
Major by C.P.E. Bach and
Suite in G Major by Tele-
mann. Mrs. Zukerman
had her role in Sonata by
Poulenc and Two Pieces
for flute• and piano by
Faure. Zukerman's solos
included Sonata in A
Major by Faure, Suite in
G Major by Telemann and
Sonata in G minor -by De-
bussy.
The Zukermans' family
and professional partner-
ship -is like a musical ro-
mance. There was inspi-
ration for both for each
other, and the differing
instruments over which
they mastered became
added means of establish-
ing a cooperative and
non-obstructive partner-
ship.
Eugenia is the Ameri-
can girl who loved music
and her instrument. In
Pinchas_ she found the
ideal collaborator in her
interpretive art. Pinchas
is the Israeli who, when
only 13, earned the atten-
tion of Isaac Stern, who
recognized ability and
encouraged the boy's con-
tinuing studies.
- Pinchas had two prod-
ders. He was inspired to
continue his expertness on
the violin by Pablo Casals

as well as Stern. The re-
sult, now that he is 28, is
the fulfillment of predic-
tions by two of the world's
greatest musicians that
another Israeli would
make his mark and emerge
as one of the great vio-
linists of this generation.
The Zukermans' con-•
cert was part of the series
sponsored by the Found-
ers Society of the Detroit
Institute of Arts. The
next artist in the series
will be Van Cliburn, April
19.
The Zukermans were
brought to Detroit by im-
presario Edith J.
Freeman, who is honor-
ary curator of music for
the art institute.
