Architect Paul Tilds

Paul Tilds, a retired ar-
chitect, died Feb. 12 at
age 73.
Born in Chicago, Mr.
Tilds lived 55 years in De-
troit. The owner of Paul
Tilds and Associates in
Ferndale, Mr. Tilds re-
tired five years ago. He
was an emeritus
graduate of the Univer-
sity of Michigan School of
Architecture in 1925. He
was the architect for the
Jewish Community
Center on Meyers and
Curtis Rds.
He was a founding
member of Temple Israel
and a member of the
American Institute of
chitects. He resided at
.140 Partridge Ln.,
r armington Hills.
He leaves his wife,
Clare; a son, Dr. Barry N.;
a daughter, Mrs. Daniel
(Jo Margery) Gilbert; and
six grandchildren.

Brazil Journalist

RIO DE JANEIRO
(JTA) — Shabtai Kara-
kushansky, the oldest
Jewish journalist in
Brazil, is dead.
Born in Bessarabia 76
years ago, he arrived in
Rio de Janeiro in 1922. He
was the author of the first
Yiddish book, "Zion"
(1925) that was printed
and published in Brazil.
In 1927 Karakushansky
founded and edited the
first Yiddish daily in Rio,
"Yiddishe Folkzaitung."
The newspaper sus-
pended publication in
1941 during the Vargas
dictatorship when all
foreign language publica-
tions were forbidden.

Ephraim Levine, 83

Ephraim Levine, a re-
tired dry cleaning store
owner, died Feb. 13 at age
83.
Born in Russia, Mr.
Levine lived 67 years in
Detroit. He opened Vogue
Cleaners in Royal Oak in
1927 and sold it in 1952. In
1954 he bought LeMere
Cleaners in Detroit and
sold it in 1967 upon his re-
tirement. He was a
member of the Oddfellows
and Brandeis Lodge of
Bnai Brith.
He
leaves
two
daughters, Mrs. Louis
(Elizabeth) Freeman and
Mrs. Herbert (Lillian)
Tennen; and five grand-
children.

Feder, a leader in Reform
Judaism in America and
retired executive director
of Cong. Rodeph Sholom
in New York, died Feb. 13
at age 76.
Dr. Feder was a foun-
der of the National As-
sociation of Temple Ad-
ministrators and was its
president from 1948 to
1955.
He was a member of the
Commission of Synagogue
Activities of the Union of
American Hebrew Con-
gregations, a member of
the union's national board
from 1950 to 1955 and a
past president of the Met-,
ropolitan Chapter of Tem-
ple Administrators.
He contributed articles
on group work, educa-
tional projects and com-
munity service the
Jewish Welfare Board
publications and social
work journals. He served
on the boards and special
committees of the United
Jewish-Appeal, the Fed-
eration of Jewish Philan-
thropiesjnd more.
