many works by Jewish and
Israeli composers, and
Zukerman "plays a zillion

and Jewish groups."

BY HEIDI PRESS

Concert flutist Eugenia
Zukerman takes candles-
ticks with her while on
tour so that she can ob-
serve Shabat wherever
her tour schedule leads.
"Shabat was a large
part of my life, - she said.
Interviewed this week
in advance of a perfor-
mance with her husband,
Pinchas Zukerman, re-
nowned concert violinist,
to take place Tuesday
evening at the Detroit In-
stitute of Arts, Mrs.
Zukerman talked about
the couple's ability to
practice Judaism despite
a . heavy world concert
schedule.
"We always have a seder
wherever we are in the
world. If you are Jewish
you feel it from your
roots...
The daughter of a Re-
form Jewish father and
mother, who are a scien-
tist and amateur pianist
and dancer, respectively,
Mrs. Zukerman said she
is the more observant of
the couple. She said her
husband is "not terribly
observant," however, he
enjoyS the family's
Shabat celebration be-
cause it is a time for the
family to be together.
Their four-year-old -
daughter attends Cong.
Rodeph Shoiom in New
York where she learns
Hebrew and Israeli
songs. "I want my chil-
dren to have a basis in re-
ligious knowledge," Mrs.
Zukerman said. She
added the couple plan to
take their two children to -
Israel to learn how the Is-
raelis celebrate Sukkot
and the major festivals.
A frequent visitor to Is-
rael, Mrs. Zukerman was
proud to be there in 1973,
during the Yom Kippur
War. "It was an experi-

According to Mrs.
Zukerman, her husband's
Israeli heritage has
created a problem for him.
In Israel he faced no anti-
Semitism, however, in
New York he learned what
it was all about.
She recalled that dur-
ing a walk the couple pas-
sed the 'New York Athle-
tic Club and "Pinky, - as
she refers to her husband,
remarked that he would
someday like to become a
member. "It's an exclu-
sive club," she told her
husband. He didn't un-

The club did not admit
Jews.
