temple. Rabbi Plaut will
review "Roots" by Alex
Haley. Refreshments will
follow.

graduated from MacAles-
ter College and was or-
dained at the Hebrew
Union College-Jewish In-
stitute of Religion. A few
months ago, he received
an D.H.L. degree from
HUC-JIR.

Chinuch Atzmai Torah
school network in Israel
has 40,000 students in 140
kindergartens, 200
elementary schools • and
24 junior high schools and
mesiftos, serving 125
communities. There are
also day care centers for
pre-school children. Free
lunches and dinners are
given needy students.
Torah Schools for Is-
rael has engaged special
teachers and counselors
for Russian immigrants
and educationally dep-
rived children. A teachers
institute in Jerusalem
and educational college in
Chazon Yecheskiel have
been established.
Nathan P. Rossen will be
honored "for his many
years of exemplary service
and self-sacrifice for
Torah education."
Rabbi .Leizer Levin is
chairthan, and Rabbi
Leib Bakst, honorary
chairman. Marvin Berlin
is the co-chairman. Rabbi
Eli Koslowitz, assistant
to the president of Torah
Schools for Israel, also
will attend.

The Jewish Educators
Council of Metropolitan
Detroit will hold its sec-
ond annual institute for
students in Jewish high
school programs 9:30 a.m.
Sunday at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek.
Under the chairman-
ship of Benjamin Ben-
Baruch, the institute this
year will have the theme
of "Betweeen Man and
Man: An In-Depth Look
at Jewish Ethics."
The first part of the day
will be spent discussing
inter-marriage and its im-
plications. Ben-Baruch
will lead a response ses-
sion to the film "Rachel."
In the second part of
the institute, the stu-
dents will participate in
workshop groups con-
ducted by Dr. Mintzi

The present upper
Galilee Arab village of
Akbara is identified with
the • ancient Jewish vil-
lage of Akhbarei, the
home of a number of a
sages_of the Talmud.

Temple Beth-El religi-
ous school announces
there still are openings in
its program designed for
children with behavioral
problems. The program,
`Rishonim,' is sponsored
by the Orchards Children
Services, under the direc-
tion of Gerald Levin,
and supported by the Na-
tional Council of Jewish
Women.
The program, which
began last October', is
open to children not cur-
rently attending religi-
ous school programs or
who have had difficulties
in other religious school
classrooms.
The curriculum is de-
signed to introduce the
children to their Jewish
heritage through discus-
sions, games and arts and
crafts. A short Sabbath
service also is conducted
each week by Rabbi Jef-
frey Lazar, educational di-
rector of the temple.
Space in the program is
limited. Parents in-
terested in enrolling their
child in the Rishonim
program may call Rabbi
Lazar at the religious
school office, 851-1100.

to Study in Israel

"Women and Women's
Rights"; Dr. Jay B. Stern,
United Hebrew Schools,
"Ethics in the Midrash";
and Dr. Gerald Teller,
Shaarey Zedek, "Jewish
Medical Ethics.'

Aaron Mood, a 10th
grade student in Yp-
silanti, will study at the
American-Israel Secon-
dary School at Kfar Blum
in Israel. There he will
participate in a part-time
work program, tour the
country and become a
temporary member of a
kibutz family.
