Israel Envoy Deplores
Lack of Sephardic Activity

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Ambassador Ovadia
Sofer, an Iraqi-born
member of Israel's
United Nations Mission,
deplores the lack of active
involvement by Sephar-
dic Jews in Jewish com-
munity affairs, a phe-
nomenon he finds both in
Israel, where Jews or
Oriental background
compreise the majority of
the population, and the
U.S. where they consti-
tute only two percent of
the Jewish population.
Sofer explained the
reasons for this situation
at a luncheon held last
week by a group of women
who hope to launch a sys-
tematic program of
Sephardic activities in
the U.S.
The luncheon was at-
tended by 20 women rep-
resenting Sephardic
communities from 16
countries of origin.
It was hosted by Mrs.
Liliane Winn, president of
the American Sephardic

Federation, and was ad-
dressed, in addition to
Sofer, by Mrs. Kitty
Dukakis, wife of the Gov-
ernor of Massachusetts.
Sofer said Sephardic
Jews in Israel and the
U.S. lacked organizations
because organizations
were not part of the pat-
tern of Jewish life in the
countries they came
from.
He urged increased
Sephardi consciousness
not only in Israel but in
the U.S. "because
Sephardim who are not
aware of their heritage
are not only lost as
Sephardim, but their
children are frequently
lost as Jews."

Uriah Hendricks estab-
lished a metals business

which his grandson Uriah
continued as Hendricks
Bros., the oldest Jewish

America.

match the 1972 high mark
and appealed for vaster
increases in the years
ahead.
Ami Spektor, Michigan
resident manager of El Al
Israel Airlines, stated
that the facilities of the
air service are constantly
being implemented with
newest methods of re-
ndering service and said
the pride in the Israel air-
line is gaining momen-
tum thanks to the effi-
ciency of the operations.
John Shepherd, presi-

dent of the Jewish Com-
munity Council, who
presided, reported on his
visit in Israel last month
and urged increased
tourism to Israel by
Michigan Jews. He urged
congregational and or-
ganizational eooperation
in expanding tourism and
pledged the Council's as-
sistance in all such ef-
forts.
