She was already estab- lishing a reputation as a poet of note, and her works could fill volumes. She wrote book reviews and reported on operatic and other musical events for local newspapers. She is all of that to this day — and that is what makes her such a re- markable woman. At 90 her typing is faultless, and she does not write gossip. She is the marvel- ous observer who reads extensively and commen- tates fluently. While many of her poems are addressed to her grand- children, she is limitless in her subject matter and to this day produces ver- ses that have enchanted young and old. On her 90th birthday, in her Fort Lauderdale, Fla. home, people of all faiths will be among the many who visit her, to greet her, and to enjoy the re- freshments she herself prepares with culinary skill. She takes great pride in her children, the two De- troit attorneys, Erwin and William; her world famous Richard Prof. son, Ellmann, the acknowl- edged leading authority on Joyce and Yeats, and in her grandchildren who are now making their marks in the academic world. The roles played by the second and third genera- tions of the Ellmanns are best described by her, and here, too, she emerges with poetic skill in por- traying the family tree: Barbara R. Nurenberg, formerly director of coun- seling service for the Jewish Vocational Serv- ice and Community Workshop, has been pro- moted to assistant execu- tive director. Mrs. Nurenl rg has lleen associated with the agency since 1970 when she became one of the first counselors in the newly organized South- field branch of the agency. Erwin intended to make it but he is immersed in trying to put 1,400 teachers back to work. I am putting my faith in vacationing Detroiters and others around me, if I drag along till then. "Dick recently re- turned from a lecture tour through Romania. We will have a small book out here by Faber and Ox- ford in England while he works on a biography of Oscar Wilde. In spring he will come with Mary to lecture in California and colleges in the east but mostly at the University of Chicago. They will visit me also. She lets it be known that "on Feb. 13 I will have my last open house." No one believes it. Her husband switched to economics and computer and abandoned English for nobody needs to study that any more! He has a part time job with some environmental agency meanwhile so not only his wife is the family breadwinner. A sad com- mentary ...
