Farmington Hills, 855-1020 Ben Smith Don Barden NEW YORK — Several hundred Orthodox Rab- bis went to school to learn how to combat, in an un- orthodox way, the Jews for Jesu-s movements and other alienated groups which seek to "brainwash and evangelize" -young Jews. One suggestion was that "coffee houses" be established on • off- synagogue premises to bring young Jews back to the synagogue or to keep them there. It was estimated that 5,000 "missionaries" are working in the New York area. Hesh Morgan, di- rector of the Anti : Missionary Institute, said most of them are af- Orthodox Women' Will Hold Seminar- - DEXTER DAVISON KOSHER MEATS No. 2 Carl Carson 968-7450 Lincoln Center Oak Park On successive nights last month the Israeli National team drew 25,000 people to the Ramat Gan stadium in a match played against the famous Bayern-Munich soccer team, with the Is- raelis' surprisingly, win- ning 2-0. The night following the soccer match the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team played Mobile Giorgi- of Italy in a European Cup final basketball game that was witnessed by 11,000 people. The Italian Club just clobbered the Tel Aviv unity by some 25 points. The game itself was close for about lifteen minutes, after which the invaders just ran away from the Maccabi boys. Early in the week in Hapoel Tel Aviv five drew some 5,500 people to wit- ness its Courage Cup match against Sarajevo of Yugoslavia. Here, too, the Israelis just weren't good enough the match- the competition from the invaders. Tal Brody, the captain of the Maccabi basketball - team, who is probably playing his last season advised us that he is building a villa in fash- ionable Herzylia. Brody is one of the few Ameri- can Jewish athletes who really has settled in Is- rael for good. One of the stars of the Maccabi quintet, Lou Silver, formerly of Har- vard, is married to an Is- raeli women, but from all ■ indications he will be leaving the club at the conclusion of the current campaign. Silver advises us that he wants to become a ver- terinarian and is going to study in Belgium since Is- rael doesn't offer a course in this area. Steve Kaplan, formerly of Rutgers, who is with Hapoel Ramat-Gan ap- pears to be a likely candi- date to stay on perma- nently as an Israeli citi- zen. Kaplan, while he is not performing for the basketball team, is a part time sports writer for the Jerusalem Post. Mickey Berkowitz, who played for Nevada-Las Vegas last year, has set- tled down, and not only is replacing Tal Brody as the star backcourt man for the Maccabi hoop squad, but is now a full partner in Brody's lucra- tive sports equipment business. There is a good likeli- hood that one of Israel's stronger soccer teams will make a tour of the United States this year. Most professional teams in the States, quite frankly, are dow'n on the Israeli National team, not for their perform- ances on the field, but, rather their off the field shenanigans. It appears likely that club teams from Israel, as a unit, are much better behaved than the Israeli National team which is comprised of 15 prima donnas.
