THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

LISTENING
POST

By HY LEWIS
LAS VEGAS, NEV. —
WondeP of wonders, we
finally arrived here via
United Airlines charter
that was 21/2 hours late
. . . Why we were pushed
onto a puddle-jumping
charter plane after win-
g,Tand prize in the
Dysautonornia drawing is
beyond our comprehen-
sion . . . One would cer-
tainly think such a win-
ning should merit better
treatment . . . The prize
included two plane tick-
ets . . . not a charter tour
ride.
The small, cramped
plane was kind of ridicul-
ous . . And to top every-
thing, it was two hours
late getting off the
ground .. . . late coming
from Chicago . . . and
then having a flat tire.
As example of the type
of personnel United Air-
lines had on this flight, we
asked the male attendant
where to plug the ear
phones (this being an
older model, it is not at
your seat) . . . Rather
than a polite answer, his
smart alec crack was, "In
your ears." . . . Thanks to
wife Frieda, we found it in
back.
Some of the food was
still frozen when given to
us!
Then came McCarran
Field in Las Vegas . . .
and we had to wait until a
gate opened . . . then
another half-hour wait for
our luggage . . . Since we
had been put on a cheap
tour trip instead of a regu-
. lar flight, we had to wait
until luggage for the other
assigned hotels was cared
for first before ours.
The trip back. was on ,
the same plane, same
cramped quarters, same
noisy, drunken crowd. . .
but a crew that merits
many plaudits for its ex-
cellence . . . People like
stewardess Jan
Covington, only four
year's with United, but
undoubtedly one of their
prize employees . . . and
the other gracious folks
who made the trip back
home tolerable. -
The magic lure that
surrounds Las Vegas is,
for most, restricted to its
gaming, biggie shows and
fine eating spots . . .
Naturally, these must
rank at the top for
tourists.
The continuous activity
of Las Vegas is without
equal anywhere.
But for most of the guys
'n gals who work at the
strip or downtown hotels,
give them the life of nor-
malcy that goes on any-
where in the country . . .
Las Vegas not excluded.
Take a gent like Morrie
Jaeger, handsome casino
manager at the MGM
Grand Hotel . . . and cer-
tainly one of the most liked
. . . When working, Mor-
rie is sharply dressed in
sartorial elegance . . . .
But at home, he and close

friend, actor Jimmy Caan,
make it a regular thing
walking down the street
together in dungarees . . .
"Jimmy rides in rodeos,"
says Morrie, "and I watch
him get up off the ground."
Morrie is considered to
have one of the sharpest
minds on the strip . . .
and well he should as
manager of a casino as
. large as a football field
ever overflowing
with exuberant action.
, He'll be one of the man-
aging advisors for the
new MGM Grand Reno,
slated to open in May,
1978 . . . The high-rise is
already in construction
. . . and will have a casino
twice the size of that in
Las Vegas . . . There'll be
1,100 rooms, space for 600
to 800 campers, bingo par-
lor, jai alai, race book and
a bowling alley . . . Mor-
rie goes there regularly
. . . and when it is
opened, will continue his
trips.
Not to forget a couple of
gals who deserve a lot of
ink are Morrie's two right
hands . . . JoAnn Forbes
and Roz Caldwell, his
executive secretaries . .
JoAnn will be remem-
bered by many in Lansing
as Democratic secretary
in the House of Represen-
tatives prior to coming to
Las Vegas two years ago.
Sid Hudson, of course
. . Here is a living
legend who left Detroit as
Sid Hudash . . . went to
Los Angeles . . . was in
the shoe business . . .
came to Las Vegas for a
weekend in 1946 (De-
cember was his 31st an-
niversary), and made it
his home . . . There were
only three hotels on the
strip . . . Flamingo, New
Frontier and El Rancho
. . . Sid was invited to
stay at the Flamingo and
has never left.
Horst Dziura, managing
director at the Flamingo
Hilton, laughs at even the
thought of Sid ever leaVing
. . . The 750-room
Flamingo is in the midst of
a three-phase remodeling
plan that will ultimately
give it 2,250 rooms by 1981
. . . The first phase now
going on includes a 500-
room tower, four new res-
taurants, a lounge show
and 900-seat auditorium
. . . Phase two includes
another 500-room tower
plus 40,000 feet of banquet
area . . . and phase three
will finish with a third
500-room tower.
Working at the MGM
Grand, ex-Detroiter Stu
Segal says, "Quoting
Mark Twain, the reports
of my death are greatly
exaggerated." . . . Stu
looks better than ever,
especially with his new
hair piece designed by
Joseff's of Las Vegas.
He is inclined to talk
mostly about his wife
Marge, a cocktail wait-
ress at the Las Vegas Hil-
ton, his seven-year-old
