THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Canadian Escape for Trifa? (Continued from Page 1) Trifa has been charged by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. immigration and. Naturalization Service with having lied about his membership in the Iron Guard when he entered the U.S. and when he applied for U.S. citizen- ship. Trifa lives in Grass Lake, near Jackson. Tuesday afternoon, Trifa gave a deposition in the case in a private ses- on before U.S. attor- eys in Detroit, his de- fense attorneys and a federal court stenog- rapher. The deposition, which had been sought since last summer, had been de- layed by the illness of Tri- fa's attorney and a report that Trifa had suffered a slight stroke. U.S. Assistant Attorney Frederick 'Van Tiem said he was now compiling a list of witnesses, including one in Israel, that he wants to depose. He could not esti- mate the time needed to depose the witnesses, al- though he recently pre- dicted that it would take more than a year before the case would come to trial. Ik After the depositions are gathered, Van Tiem will present the evidence to U.S. District Judge Cornelia Kennedy who will decide if the case should be tried. The charges were filed in 1974 after a 25 year battle to have INS press charges. Trifa is accused of in- stigating a pogrom in Romania in 1941 that kil- led and injured thousands of Jews. Dr. Charles Kremer of New York pressured the gov- ernment for more than 25 years to institute pro- ceedings against Trifa. * * * A Negev Nahal Becomes Kibutz Friday, January 28, 1977 Frank Foundation Has New Head AMSTERDAM (JTA)— chairman of the Anne Dick Houwaart, a 47- Frank Foundation.
