The Best of Everything
Continued from Page 28)
makes for dining happi-
ness.
NEW NAME OF former
Banyan Tree restaurant,
on Long Lake Rd. and
Livernois, is Sundown
. . . with songster Bob
Posch now in the dining
room . . . Elephant disco
remains the same . . . In-
stead of a diversified
menu as before, Sundown
is now primarily a steak
house.
MANY VOTES for best
eggs-up maker goes to
Katie Estes at Irving's
Delicatessen on Green-
field and 11 Mile . . .
Margo Thompson and
Colleen Reinbolt con-
tinue to rate among our
town's finest morning
waitresses.
NEW MENU additions
at Gallery on 10 Mile,
west of Evergreen, in-
cludes lox and onion
omelette, corned beef or
salami omelettes and six
different types of pan-
cakes . . . Clean sur-
roundings of Stephen
Becharas' Gallery re-
mains a big standout.
THE OLD SAYING,
"Never judge a book by
its cover" holds very true
for Athens Souvlaki, 11
M'le and Lahser in Har-
vard Row Mall . . .
Firstly, it may look like a
coney island spot, but
doesn't sell any . . . Its
souvlaki is considered
among the best, but this
isn't the only thing sold.
Actually, Athens Souv-
laki, only an 85-seater, is
a full and authentic
Greek restaurant . . . as
example what pleasant
waitress Kim Bower
brought us . . . prepared
by Chef George Zeron,
who does all the cooking:
A huge. Greek salad for
three, mixed by owner
Tony Keros, was hard to
beat . . . Then came
Spanakotyropita (spin-
ach pie), moist and de-
licious, Mousaka, Pas-
titsio, Baby Lamb Chops
with rice pilaf . . . rice
pudding, creamy and
yummy . . . and three
types of Baklava . . .
Scott wanted his Souvlaki
Sandwich too, and ate it
with much gusto delight.
Business is up 35 per-
cent over last year, says
Tony . . . Quite an indica-
tion for this little place
that bakes its own dough,
makes, its own pita bread
that comes warm and fresh
with all dinners and salads
. . (there's Greek bread,
too, if you want) . . . and it
is one of the few places
that imports Feta cheese
from Greece for its salads
and spinach pies . . . Most
other places use a domes-
tic Feta cheese which
doesn't quite taste the
same.
Tony Keros came here
from Greece in 1960 and
three days later was
working in a restaurant
. . . which he has been
ever since . . . only this
time as a boss . . . Plus
Athens Souvlaki, he also
owns Koney Island Inn on
Woodward and Congress
. . . and will soon open
another eatery - in
Rochester.
The prices here are
very reasonable . . . and
the Greek food choice.
NEW SHOW IDEA by
George Young at the Jes-
ter's Court on Warren
and Telegraph is going
over big . . . No cover or
minimum, and dinner
during week is $4.95.
LINDA LINDAUER,
4'10" founder and na-
tional director of Diet
Workshop, who will be in
Detroit, Feb. 14 and 15, to
launch the new south-
eastern Michigan chap-
ter of Elaine and Ron
Joseph, with radio and TV
appearances, is a
graduate of Brandeis
University.
But one of the best
things Lois is known for,
besides her weight-
control-with-ease prog-
rams, is a devotion to nut-
rition eating for health
purposes . . . Although
weight problems seem to
be the thing today, more
emphasis should be
placed on the value of
nutritional dining for
health . . . whichLois
and her Diet Workshops
concentrate so much on.
On the weight side, the
Congressional Record
tells that "Lois Lindauer
has converted her loss of
one-third of herself into a
gain for the entire coun-
try." . . . This is one sen-
tence in a page-long entry
made about Diet Work-
shop, December of 1973
. . . Its diet was given to
the 93rd Congress.
AL NAFTAL, former
Jewish actor at Littman's
Theater, 1938 - 1942, has a
Jewish theatrical prog-
ram every Thursday 1-2
p.m. on WMZK, 98 FM
. . . reminding folks of
yesteryears in the Jewish
theatrical era.
SPEAKING OF losing
weight, friend of Sammy
Woolf went on a diet and
lost 100 pounds . . . When
asked to relate her most
thrilling moment regard-
ing this feat, she said, "It
was the day my 6-year-old
took me to school for
show-and-tell."
