BONN — Bishop Hanns
Lilje, a leader of the
anti-Nazi Protestant
movement in Germany,
died Jan. 7 at age 76.
Bishop Lilje, along with
Martin Niemoeller, led
the opposition in the
Evangelical (Lutheran)
Church to Nazi doctrine.
They took the lead in
founding the Confes-
sional Church, which
broke tradition with the
Protestant movement in
Germany by questioning
for the first time the Pro-
testant Church's al-
legiance to the ruling
government.
He was arrested by the
Gestapo in 1944 and jailed
in Nuremberg until 1945
when the Americans cap-
tured the city.
Nathan Cooper, 64
Nathan Cooper, foun-
der and chairman of the
board of the Cooper Drug
Co. of Madison Heights, a
wholesale drug distribu-
tor, died Jan. 16 at age 64.
A native Detroiter who
resided in Florida for the
past four years, Mr.
Cooper .was a member of
Perfection Lodge of the
Masons, the Alpha Zeta
Omega Pharmaceutical
Fraternity, Aesculapian
Pharmaceutical Society
and Adat Shalom Syna-
gogue. He was residing in
Ft. Lauderdale.
He leaves his wife,Tris-
cilia; three daughters,
Mrs. Gail Schatten of Ann
Arbor, Mrs. Judy Gottlieb
and Mrs. Linda Marx; two
sisters, Mrs. Ethel Tigay
and Mrs. Helen Miller;
and 12 grandchildren.
