According to the ADL, one of the coalitions rep- resents large and re- spectable firms within the American business establishments and the other is a potpourri of Arab-American organi- zations and extremists with records of anti- Semitism. Arnold Forster, gen- eral counsel of the ADL, who headed the investi- gation which led to the disclosures, said at a press conference that while there is no evidence of direct interaction be- tween the two coalitions, they use the same argu- ments and have the mutual goal of prevent- ing passage of effective U.S. legislation against Arab boycott operations in this country. headed a dubious drug rehabilitation program funded by the Depart- ment of Health, Educa- tion and Welfare. Joseph said the ADL did not know the source of FEATT's income. In addition to Forster, Joseph was joined at the press conference by Ben- jamin R. Epstein, national director of the ADL and Maxwell E. Greenberg, chairman of its national executive committee. The ADL report pointed out that major oil companies, heavy equip- ment manufacturers and construction and en- gineering firms with large stakes in the multi-billion dollar Arab market stepped up their advertising and public re- lations campaigns last summer and early fall aimed at thwarting anti- boycott legislation. This occurred after the passage of Senate and House bills by substantial majorities. According to the ADL report, the NAM, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and ECAT have each as- signed staff to drafting public and legislative posi- tions for approval by the three organizations before the end of this month. The ADL said the prop- osals are being coordi- nated and the coalition is expected to go beyond its own constituencies to seek support from small and medium sized busi- nesses, organized labor and employe groups. The campaigns now being mounted "will be the most extensive yet seen," the ADL leaders said. Benjamin R. Epstein, national director of the ADL announced last Thursday that the ADL and the Business Round- table, an organization made up of the chief executives of 170 major American corporations, will conduct a joint meet- ing next Friday--in Chicago for the purpose of exchanging views on ef-,-) forts to reach a mutual 1 accommodation with re- spect to Arab boycott–is- sues. The meeting wily-- de chaired jointly by Irving S. Shapiro, chairman of the board of the Du Pont Com- pany, who is chairman of the Business Roundtable, and Burton M. Joseph, na- tional chairman of the league and president of I.S. The Commission on Economic Coercion and Discrimination, headed by Profk Irwin Cotler of McGill University, ported that it found "a pattern of compliance and complicity with the Arab boycott in both the public and private sec- tors." It also identified seven types of boycott clauses found in boycott-related documents including some reflecting religious discrimination. through its agencies and officials, has acquiesced and facilitated the appli- cation of the Arab boycott in Canada. The Commission said, however, that it was "heartened and encour- aged by the government's statement of policy on Oct. 21, 1976 as an impor- tant first step" against boycott compliance. But, the report added, "unless- this policy is but- ressed by legislation pro- hibiting compliance and by the administrative di- rectives of a specific character, the policy it- self stands to be un- dermined." Cotler said that without legislation "we are in danger of creating two kinds of corporate citizens Among the findings in Canada: those that were that Canadian char- slowed government policy tered banks process let- and are rewarded for it tens of credit with and those that respect boycott-related provi- government policy and are sions; Canadian firms penalized for it." Israel Accused by Red Cross of Force-Feeding Its Prisoners TEL AVIV — The In- ternational Red Cross has accused Israel of force-feeding Arab hunger strikers protest- ing conditions in Israeli prisons. The Red Cross said 370 prisoners serving long jail terms, some of them life sentences at Ashke- lon Prison, have been on a hunger strike since Dec. 10. • Prison authorities give the strikers a liquid diet of eggs, protein and sugar and "those who do not take it voluntarily are force- fed," a Red Cross official said. Meanwhile, Israe cials denied reports .L.Lom Jordan that one Arab prisoner died as a result of the strike and others- were seriously ill.
