The act of carrying is one
of the 39 major categories of
work that are prohibited on
the Sabbath. What is in-
volved in this prohibition is
carrying an object from the
private to the public do-
main, or from the public to
the private domain, or from
one location in the public
domain to another location
in the public domain.

did on the first Sabbath of
creation, carrying objects
across such borderlines is
included.

It is also to be noted that
the transport of objects
from one domain to another
is a creative act since the
change of location of objects
is a productive and purpose-
ful objective. Since the Sab-
bath requires us to refrain
from creative and purpose-
ful acts, like the Almighty

• Another talmudic source
tries to derive the prohibi-
tion against carrying to the
biblical passage where
Moses tells the people not to
bring any more contribu-
tions to him for the sanctu-
ary (Exodus 36.6).

Some claim that the
prohibition generally was
ordained to separate the
person from the public
domain of the market
place on the Sabbath, so
that he can enjoy the spir-
itual benefit of privacy on
the Sabbath.

The rabbis in the Talmud
attempt to derive this prohi-
bition from the description
of the provision of two por-
tions of manna on Friday
in the wilderness making
unnecessary to cross the
threshold between one's
home and the street to
gather the manna so
"that a person not go out
from his place on the
Seventh day" (Erubin
17B).
