Special Blessing for Wine
BY RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
(Copyright I977, JTA, Inc.)
A drink of wine re-
quires a special benedic-
tion whereas other liq-
uids have a general be-
nediction in Jewish
ritual.
Such is the law as pre-
scribed in the Talmud

(Mishna Berakot 35a).
The Talmud, in comment-
ing on the Mishnah tries
to explain this by stating
that wine has special sig-
nificance because it satis-
fies and makes a person
happy..
The Midrash (Tanhu-
ma, Toldot 10) comments
that this is also because
wine was used to accom-
pany sacrificial offerings
on the holy altar. It also,
says this same Midrash,
helped Jacob obtain the
blessing from his father,
Isaac.
Some have added the
consideration that grapes
alone, of all fruits, grow in
clusters which signifies
the feeling of togetherness
and unity.
Others have said that
wine is a substance which
gives both physical ful-
fillment as well as emo-
tional uplift. Other juices
do not provide so quick an
emotional effect. The
ideal was to serve the Al-
mighty with both one's
physical power and emo-
tional sensitivity.
