THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS State Department Unaware of Plot to Kill Kissinger WASHINGTON (JTA) — The State Department, responding to reports of an alleged Israeli-based assassination threat to Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, denied it had ever been informed of any such threat. Department spokes- man Robert Funseth de- clared that the depart- ment does not normally get reports from the Se- cret Service about threats against the sec- retary of state and that the department's policy was not to comment in any way about stories on specific threats. However, he added, "We have never been in- formed of any threats in- volving Israeli political parties, or any group within an Israeli political party, including specifi- cally the Likud." The statement followed publication of a story by the New York Daily News that a "radical splinter" group in the opposition Likud, or "perhaps" the Jewish Defense League, was involved in the alleged plot, in which $150,000 purportedly was collected to engage two European killers to assassinate Kis- singer. The United Zionists Revisionists and the JDL both repudiated the as- sassination report as un- true and slanderous, while Likud said the charges were ridiculous. The 80 year old sheikh made his remarks on re- turning from a visit to Jordan last Friday. He was welcomed by thousands of well- wishers in Hebron who beat drums, blew horns and hailed him as "leader of the West Bank." Asked if he had spoken to any PLO representa- tives in Amman, he re- plied, "No, they did not speak to me and I regret it." - HARRY ABRAM SELLS MORE Because He Gives - ALL OUR OLDSMOBILES HAVE SAKS APPEAL Nahum Goldmann Says Israel Should Produce a Peace Plan TEL AVIV (JTA) — Dr. Nahum Goldmann, presi- dent of the World Jewish Congress, called on Israel to produce a peace plan of it own, Goldmann told re- porters at Ben-Gurion Airport last Friday prior to leaving for West Ger- many to negotiate a final reparations settlement. The WJC head said he was convinced that the projected meeting be- tween a delegation of world Jewish leaders and President Anwar Sadat of Egypt would take place. "We are only waiting for the dates to be fixed," he said. He said the delegation would be headed by Philip Klutznick, chairman of the WJC's Board of Gov- ernors. He said he would not participate because Sadat considered him "too Zionist" but he did not rule out a separate meeting later between himself and Sadat. Goldmann said that one should try to take Sadat seriously. "Let the Israelis for once — and they have not done that as yet—pro- duce a plan of their own for a peace proposal and rec- ognition of the Arabs. "Let us see what would be the reaction of the Arabs to the Israeli plan. If they reject it, the whole world would see that the Arabs are bluffing," Goldmann said. Addressing the inter- national conference of Jewish journalists in Jerusalem last week, Goldmann reiterated his belief that, for the first time in 28 years there is a real chance for a break- through for a Middle East settlement. He said his optimism was based on his belief that most Arab countries are ready to accept Israel because they finally realize there is no way to destroy her. But Goldmann criti- cized the Israeli govern- ment which, he con- tended, so far has pre- sented a "schizophrenic face" to the world with every minister proposing his own personal peace plan and his own view of what constitutes secure borders. 300 Bond Leaders to Attend Prime Minister's Conference NEW YORK — A dele- gation of 300 community leaders from the United States and Canada will leave for Israel on Tues- day to take part in a con- ference with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and other government leaders on Israel's economic needs for 1977.
