Shapiro Urges
Zionist Talks

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Dr. Judah J. Shapiro,
president of •the Labor
Zionist Alliance, said last
Sunday that there is a
need for Labor Zionist
groups in America to
press for the restoration
of discussions in the U.S.
of the ideological defi-
nitions of Zionism and its
program.
Addressing the organi-
zation's National Execu-
tive Committee, Shapiro
said that "Many Ameri-
can Jews were reluctant
to criticize Israel." But,
said, the Labor Zionist
ovement cannot act in
the U.S. on either the
teachings of the past or
on directives of the lead-
ership in the U.S. and Is-
rael, but must come for-
ward with its own posi-
tions emerging from its
unique American experi-
ence.
Only then could it "en-
gage in a fruitful dialogue
with Israel," he said.

Luncheon Honors
Prof., Dropsie U.

PHILADELPHIA — A
birthday luncheon cele-
brating the 80th year of
Dr. Solomon Grayzel,
noted historian who has
been professor of history
at the Dropsie Univer-
sity, and also marking the
70th year of the founding
of the post-graduate uni-
versity, was tendered by
the Women's Division of
Friends of The Dropsie
University.
Dr. Grayzel, who re-
ceived his doctoral degree
at Dropsie 50 years ago,
has won eminence as
teacher, historian, writer
and editor in the world of
Jewish scholarship.

The university also an-
nounced the appointment
of Mrs. Mary S. Cohen to
head its library commit-
tee. The committee will
develop the library
through wider public
support and general
scholastic interest. Mrs.
Cohen is a member of
Dropsie's board of gover-
nors.

Body and Soul

Rabbi Israel Lipkin
Salanter preached a ser-
mon on the Sabbath of
Repentance in which he
expressed this thought:
"It is usual that a man
expresses concern for his
own body and for the soul
of his neighbor. He usu-
ally doesn't worry about
his own soul nor about the
ody of his neighbor. The
everse should be the
case if man is to repent
and earn his share in the
world to come.
"Man should disregard
his own body and pay at-
tention to his soul. He
also need not be con-
cerned about the soul of
his neighbor but he
should make certain to
provide for his bodily
needs."
