Labor Party Unity Will Be Critical in Election

The central committee
of the party supported
Rabin's action without
opposition, but the His-
tadrut organ Davar re-
ported criticism in other
labor circles, including
Cabinet members Peres,
Shlomo Hillel, Chaim
Bar-Lev, the late Ab-
raham Ofer, Gad Yaacovi
and Moshe Baram.
The young leaders of the
Paity are preparing for a
fierce struggle against the
veterans. They do not like
Golda Meir's support for
Rabin and his partisans.
They maintain that Mrs.
Meir should refrain from
meddling.
The struggle will reach
its peak before the party
convention at the end of
February, when the can-
didates list for the Knes-
set elections will be estab-
lished.

TEL AVIV — During
the first days of the gov-
ernment crisis in Israel
Premier Yitzhak Rabin
showed his party and the
population his muscle.
But soon Abba Eban,
Shimon Peres and the
young labor par* leaders
started to criticize him.
At first, his announce-
ment that the three
Cabinet members of the
Religious National Party
\dafdal) had to _resign be-
_ause of their breach of
Coalition discipline, made
a great impression. But it
turned out that Rabin's
drastic step was not only
intended to safeguard the
prestige of the govern-
ment but to strengthen
his position within his
party against Peres.
Eban attacked Rabin's
step strongly. In the
ranks of the Labor Party
criticsm was voiced
against Eban's appear-
ance on TV.
