The irresponsible, if not treasonous, activities of Matti Peled, former Is- raeli general turned lec- turer on Arabic studies and militant propagan- dist for the illusory "ob- jectives" of the Israel Council for . Israeli- Palestinian Peace, must '4.44 be exposed and re- pudiated for what they really are: misleading the Jewish and general public that Israel-Arab peace may be achieved if Israel will make "concessions" to the Arabs (such as the establishment of a Pales- tinian state under the aegis of the PLO) and en- couraging Congress, the State Department and the Carter Administra- tion to apply pressure on Israel to make considera- ble concessions which, in the long run, will en- danger Israel's security and existence. • Matti Peled and his very few supporters in Is- rael 'have their counter- part in the U.S. in "Breira," a small group of Jewish-Americans who advocate Arab "rightS" and "national aspira- . tions" and negotiations of "all territorial gains re- sulting from the 1967 war" (they discount Sadat's latest demand for a complete, one-stage Is- raeli withdrawal from all territories before negoti- ations and the inclusion of PLO in the Geneva con- ference). This group includes Ar- thur Waskow, Max Ticktin (assistant national direc- tor of Bnai Brith Hillel), Robert Loeb (formerly connected with the Com- mittee on New Alterna- tives in the Middle East, an organization that was listed Z s part of the Arab lobby in the U.S.), Rabbi Balfour Brickner, David Tulin and Irving Howe. The American Jewish community, through its responsible national and local organizations should disavoW and re- pudiate the actions and pronouncements of this self-styled, publicity- seeking "peace" group which gives comfort and political ammunition to the enemies of Israel. Louis Panush Chairman, Public Affairs. Committee Editor, The Jewish News: The letter from Ted Mandell of the Zionist Organization of America concerning the Jewish peace movement is, so fil- led with inaccuracies and distortions that I hardly know where to begin to respond. Mandell charges that Breira advocates that Is- rael "should depend on international guarantees for its continued exis- tence" and that "Jerusalem should be in- ternationalized under the UN." Speaking as a member of, though not a spokesman for Breira, I can only wonder what is the- source of Mr. Man- dell's information. While the adoption of formal regulations of principle and policy await the First National Con- ference in Washington next month, Breira has in the past been very sym- pathetic to the Manifesto of the Israel Council for Israeli-Palestine Peace. For example, ctincern- ing Jerusalem the man- ifesto states," Jerusalem is the eternal capital of Is- rael" and must "remain united under a common municipal roof- organization". While it Friday, January 14, 1977 21 And Is Defended does go on to state that due to its religious signifi- cance to the three - faiths, "It deserves a special status", nowhere is there any mention of "inter- nationalizing Jerusalem under the UN" as charged. Mr. Mandell goes on to charge that the program Breira advocates would "dismantle Israel piece by piece-without peace". Just what is the program to which he refers? Basically, Breira advo- cates territorial com- promise in the occupied territories and peace be, tween the Israelis and the Palestinians on the principle of mutual rec- ognition of ' national rights, i.e. the right of the Jews to the sovereign Jewish state of Israel and the Palestinians-- to a Palestinian Arab state to be established in addition to Israel. To charge thai this would "dismantle" Israel assumes that the West Bank and Gaza are integ- ral parts of Israel. In any event the criti- cism ignores the other half of Breira's position— that the Israeli com- promises would be part of an overall peace settle- ment in which for the first EXPERT CARPET CLEANING time the Arab states would formally recognize the sovereignty of the Jews in Israel. ZOA — Detroit District * * Israel Day Ought to Be Joint Effort Editor, The Jewish News: It is incomprehensible to me that two of the major forces in the Jewish community can- not join efforts to help create a community-wide celebration for Israel In- dependence Day.
