Professor
Calls Israel Rich

in Vital Natural Resources

HAIFA — The myth of
Israel as a country poor in
natural wealth was dis-
pelled recently by Prof. A.
Metzer, the head of the
mineral engineerkag divi-
sion of the civil engineer-
ing faculty of the Techn-
ion — Israel Institute of
Technology.

Prof. Metzer investi-,
gated data on the natural
wealth, and value of min-
erals production in vari-
ous countries relative to
their area and popula-
tion. Based on UN statis-
tics for the year 1972-

1973, Israel produced
minerals valued at 5100
million, which is $32 per
person, or $4,830 per
square • kilometer of area
(not including cement,
building stone and petro-
leum).

These figures place Is-
rael in a respectable posi-
tion relative to'other raw
material producing coun-
tries such as Japan, Nor-
way, Denmark, Portugal,
Finland, Turkey, Syria,
Jordan, Uruguay — all of
whom are poorer in
natural wealth than Is-
rael according to this
method of calculation.

According to Prof.
Metzer, aided by appro-
priate research and de-
velopment, by 1985 the Is-
raeli minerals industry
could reach minerals pro-
duction valued at $440 mil-
lion per year.

Basing his estimate on
the fact that the principal
deposits of the Dead Sea,
phosphates and clay min-
erals, are of such mag-
nitude that a supply of
these materials is as-
sured for decades and
even hundreds of years to
come, and since most of
this production is for ex-
port, he foresees a miner-
als industry which could
be a vital factor in Israel's
future international
trade.

love of poetry. Their faro-
rite poet was Salim
(Shalom) Shebezi (17th
Century). His poetry ex-
pressed "yearning after
God and Zion - and "long-

Significant is the intro-
duction's conclusion:
"Had the Jews remained
in Yemen and stayed
alive, they would have
been thrown out of their
age-old spiritual world
. . . they would not have
found opportunities for a
life of which they were of-
fered so richly in Israel."
The stories, tales and
legends included in the
book reveal the inner
lives of the Yemenite
Jews — their beliefs,
hopes and aspirations.
Illuminating are the

Yemenite customs and

Economic pressures, rise in inflation and

supplemented his rabbini-
cal income by manual
labor: he made "arms,
ploughs, spades" and
other tools used by far-
mers. In that manner, he
fulfilled the rabbinical
precept "The Torah is
good combined with
work."
It is noteworthy that
the Yemenite Jews
created original "ag-
gadot" (legends). "Prayer
for Rain" is a typical
yenienite "aggada." It f)
when there was a drougli-L-
in the country, the people
took the Torah scrolls to
the cemetery "to pray for
rain." When rain did not
come, Ibrahim took a To-
rah, opened it, and cried
out, "I will not stir from
this place until rain
comes." Rain came, but
Ibrahim soon died after-
ward. •
"From the Land of
Sheba" portrays the
spiritual and material life
of the Yemenite Jews be-
fore they were airlifted to
Israel in 1949-50.
