Soviet Agency Hits Critics
of Russian 'Jewish' Writers

Holocaust Parley
Due in New York

NEW YORK — The an-
nual scholars' conference
on "The Church Struggle
and the Holocaust,"
sponsored by the Na-
tional Conference of
Christians and Jews, will
be held March 6-8 at the
Summit Hotel, New York
City. For information,
contact Prof. Ruth
Zerner, Lehman College,
Department of History,
Bronx, N. Y. 10468.

Attacks on those
criticizing Soviet treat-
ment of Jews is con-
tained in a release from
Novosti, the Russian
news agency, issued by
the embassy of the Soviet
Union in Washirigton.
The latest of the re-
leases, again by a Jewish
writer, Ilya Gordon, re-
fers to the now defunct
Yiddish newsletter, Der
Emes, with a complaint
that even 50 years ago the
achievements of Yiddish
writers were not recog-
nized.
What is not indicated is
that the Yiddish writers
themselves formed the
Yevsektsia, the Yiddish
Communist department,
whose policies were so an-
tagonistic to Jewry,
Judaism, Zionism and
Jewish aspirations for Is-
rael's-rebirth that Yev-
sektsia was viewed tan-

Friedman Explains
Israel's Failures

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — In
a television interview in
Israel, economist Milton
Friedman touched on the
source of Israel's lack of
success in the economic
sphere. Prof. Friedman
said that two economic
systems exist side by side
in Israel.
The first is the 100-
year-old socialist system
which held sway within
Zionism, while the second
is the 2,000-year-old eco-
nomic system which is
based on the principles of
private enterprise.
The good fortune for Is-
rael consists in the fact
that she has introduced
the second system,
stressed Friedman. If she
would have used only the
first system, that is the
socialistic one, the state
would have been ruined
long ago.
In the second part of his
interview, Friedman
touched on the fact that
all over the world for
hundreds of years, Jews
had produced men of
genius in all phases of
commerce, whereas in
their own country they
are ineffectual. He said
that in Israel there are
also excellent economists,
among them some of his
own pupils. However, be-
cause of the economic
system that operates in
that country, .they are
unable to demonstrate
their abilities.

In the newest Novosti
release the claims are

made that Yiddish writers
in Russia "are spiritually,
ideologically and politi-
cally as one with the rest of
the Soviet peoples" and
thus their writing reflects
the general Soviet love for
describing farm _and fac-
tory in novels, stories and
poems.
It is this "creative un-

ity" which Gordon de-
fends, and in turn attacks -
the "Zionists" who woulc
have Soviet Jews write on
matters of basically
Jewish interest. He calls
this "a thinly disguised
attempt to put the Jews
and their culture under
the influence of those who
aspire to guide a 'New Is-
rael'."
Gordon further claims
that about 70 writers are
currently producing
works in Yiddish, pub-
lished -monthly in
Sovietish Heimland.
Gordon finally advises
the world's "retrogrades"
not to tell the Soviet Jews
in what language and on
what subjects they -
should write.

Heart Disease Top
Killer of Israelis

JERUSALEM — Heart
disease was the biggest
cause of death among Is-
raeli Jews in 1975, an offi-
cial study shows. It was
responsible for 209 deaths
per 10,000 population,
double the rate of the
period 1950-54.
Dr. Ron _Rozin, chair-
man of the executive
committee of Magen
David Adom, Israel's na-
tional emergency medical
health and blood services,
reported that MDA has
received 16 cardiac re-
scue ambulances from
American Red Magen
David for Israel. The
MDA cardiac rescue serv-
ice is currently operating
on a 24-hour basis only in
Jerusalem.

Rabbi Schrage,
Led 'Maccabees'

NEW YORK —
Brazilian-born Rabbi
Samuel Schrage, or-
ganizer of the Maccabees,
a citizen anti-crime street
patrol, died Dec. 31 at age
44.
The Maccabees, most of
them bearded young
Hasidic Jews, rodp._
through their neighbc
hood at night with
equipped cars and large
flashlights. When they
-saw trouble they would
alert the police. If the
police were not available
they would go to the as-
sistance of the victim.
Rabbi Schrage also was
assistant executive direc-
tor of the New York City
Youth Board and in 1969
was appointed head of the
Neighborhood Action
Program. He also served

as an administrator of the
United - Lubavitcher
Yeshivot in Crown
Heights.
