One scroll was donated as a gift by Mr. and Mrs. Isadore Zweibel to Hes- der Yeshivat Yamit. In- stead of dedicating this new Torah to a syna- gogue, the Zweibels de- cided to dedicate the Torah to the young yeshiva in Kfar Darom. Two Torah__scrolls were donated by Benjamin Kamlet in behalf of his former synagogue, Bet Midrash D'sfaradim Hagadol. Kamlet was the secretary of the syna- gogue. It took two years to bring the Torah scrolls to Israel. One was dedi- cated to _the Mechina Hamercazit at Givat Shmuel located next to Bar-Ilan. (A mechina is equivalent to the Ameri- can junior high school.) The other Sefer Torah was dedicated to the Bnei Akiva ,Hesder Yeshiva, Yeshivat Hagolan. At the time, Glass was an active worker for both the Appeal and the JNF. He has dropped his busi- ness interests and is now the full-time head of the JNF. While conceding that the _ JIA has - demo- cratizied itself_ since his 1968 outburst, Glass — who was 40 last month believed the JNF can nonetheless be the fund of Anglo-Jewry's ordi- nary . men and women. It also appeals to younger people than the JIA. Its new chairman, Anthony Coore, is only 36. Of the 1 million Pounds the JNF raised last year — compared with about 13 million Pounds by the JIA — more than 70,000 Pounds Sterling came from 36,000 blue col- lection boxes in homes, schools, factories, shops and restaurants throughout the country. But changes are astir in the Anglo-Jewish fund-raising world and the JNF is preparing to assert itself more than in the past. Together with the Zionist Federation and the Jewish Agency, both funds have operated from the same building in cen- tral London. With the lease at Rex House due to end in about a year, the occupants are looking for new premises. The JNF is impatient to get out of Rex House this year and to find premises separate from the other Zionist bodies. "It will be more than just a physical break," says David Glass, the JNF's young new direc- tory, who is eager to put the JNF back on the map as "the people's fund." It is an ambition which is dear to his heart. In January, 1968, he sent a shock wave through JIA, then at the height of its post-Six-Day War - SOUTHFIELD Open Daily Mon thru Friday 11 to 9 Sat. 10 to 6 Sunday 12 to 5 more Sifrei Torah from the Jewish community of Canada. NEW YORK — The ful- fillment of a nee'd to further their Jewish heri- tage is seen as just another step in a 20,000 mile journey for two Au- stralian physicians studying at Yeshiva Uni- versity's James Striar School of General Jewish Studies. The two, Dr. Alan Gar- field and Dr. Peter Kraus, both from Melbourne, came to the university as a result of a speaking tour held in Australia three years ago by Dr. Norman Lamm, who has since been elected president of the university, and the university's "Counter- point" program, which has been sending Yeshiva University faculty, stu- dents, alumni and admin- istrators to Jewish com- munities in Australia and other foreign lands to strengthen Jewish edu- cational and cultural life.
