The Best of Everything

DANNY RASKIN'S

(Continued from Page 28)
day night being a date
/- night is not strictly ob-
served here. For the pre-
sent, wide-screen televi-
sion is offered on Sunday
and Monday with crowds
being much smaller, but
by mid-January Steve
plans to have live enter-
tainment on Mondays.
"The group of Mel Ball
and Colours is a definite
plus on this lounge's list
of attributes. The pleas-
ure was all mine whether
I was just sitting and lis-
tening, or dancing on
what Steve tells me is the
largest dance floor in
Southfield. While talking
to Mel Ball, he stated that
he really enjoys playing
to the crowd that congre-
gates here — 'They do
seem to appreciate the
music, and get into it with
us'.
"Mel put together Col-
ours about 3 1/2 years ago.
There are seven members
in the group — Mel Ball
on drums, Dennis Tini on
piano, Tony Franklin on
conga drums, Neal
Fagenbaum on bass and
Bob Scott on lead guitar.
Barbara Tini and Jane
Price lead in vocalizing,
although the guys do
share in the vocal
limelight. This past
summer the group re-
corded a single that was
released locally titled
`Coming Home America'
composed by Mel. They
also have plans for an
album to be released na-
tionally around February
— but for now you can
hear Mel Ball and Colours
at Yesterdays, Tuesdays
through Saturdays,
starting around 8:30 in
the evening.
"I found the average age
group assembling here
was between 24 and 35
with a smaller percentage
between 35 and 40. There
were a large number of
professional men and
women with backgrounds
ranging from middle to
upper-middle class. It was
surprising to find singles
here from as far away as
Grosse Pointe and Roches-
r. There were also quite
few other areas repre-
sented.
"I plan to re-visit Yes-
terdays on other nights of
the week to view the
change, if any, in the
crowd on the slower
nights. In this reviewer's
opinion, a night at Yes-
terdays is well worth the
wait to get in."
- TAJ MAHAL Indian
restaurant on 12 Mile be-
tween Greenfield and
Coolidge, seating just 64
in a very intimate atmos-
phere, ranks among the
better ethnic dining spots

.

of our locale . . . $3 off
coupon on combination
dinners for two doesn't
tell all . . . Combination
dinners_are a big thing at
Taj Mahal . . . with 18 of
them on the menu.
PEOPLE STILL call
asking a question we
thought was answered
. . . No, Dimitri's Nikos
HAS NOT MOVED! . . .
It is still on Woodward,
two blocks north of 11
Mile . . . and doing a
great business . . . There
is absolutely no affilia-
tion whatsoever with any
other Dimitri's restau-
rant . . . Next time you
go to the popular Wood-
ward spot, try their
Greek-style lamb chops
. . . If you enjoy this dish,
you won't be sorry.
READER TELLS of
going into northwest area
bagel factory, where the
girl stroked the hairback
on her head, handled cash
and then picked out her
customer's order with the
same hand . . . not using
any tissue which was al-
most a must in yes-
teryears, but practically
a "why bother" thing
today . . . Another
reader tells of going into a
bakery where woman be-
hind counter sneezed into
her hand and proceeded
to continue picking up the
baked goods . . . Natur-
ally, the customer re- •
fused to accept the order
and walked out.
PET PEEVES ... Wait-
resses who make your
salad with their hands
. . . People who put ashes
in coffee saucers . . . Res-
taurant owners who
think a customer is just
another number or part
of a herd of. cattle . . .
Waiters and waitresses
who don't smile . . .
Waiters or waitresses
who bring their personal
problems to work . . . and
take it out on the cus-
tomer . . . many of whom
have their own and came
to the restuarant to get
away from them . . . Em-
ployees behind counters
who know more about
sweeping floors than
cooking . . . especially
when it comes to making
simple eggs . . . Waiters
and waitresses who bring
orders made differently
than the way you ordered

them . . . They're either
afraid of the cook, trying
to pass off something, or
don't know any better.
NEW APPETIZER has
been added at Betty
Siegel's El Jardin Mexi-
can restaurant on W.
Seven Mile just west of
Livernois . . . It's called
Tostada del Jardin, and
_according to those who
have tried it, quite good.
THAT MENU Pamela
Joyce brought us from
Frederico Fettucini's
opening on Orchard Lake
Rd. was shaped in the
caricature of a man
whom Mike and Marian
Ilitch are hoping to make
famous under this name
. . . Plus the Italian dis-
hes, sandwiches, etc. It
also includes matzo ball
chicken soup with the ex-
planation, "If you have a
cold and can prove it,
this soup is FREE. Why
bother your mother?"
