efforts are coordinated
with the Israeli govern-
ment.
Dr. Joseph Shofmann,
of Likud, urged the
E tive to instruct
lann and Philip
Klutznick, chairman of
the government board of
the WJC and a former
U.S. Ambassador to the
United Nations, to "dis-
continue the shameful
contacts with the Egyp-
-tian Ambassador to
Washington" Ashraf
. Ghorbal. Shofmann
claimed that Premier
,Yitzhak Rabin had disav-
owed any knowledge of
such contacts and that
they were totally denied

But Goldmann told the
Executive that he had
consulted Rabin about
the contacts and that the
Premier welcomed the
idea and in_ factdiscussed
the composition of the
WJC delegation. It would
include Klutznick, Rabbi
Alexander Schindler,
chairman of the Confer-
ence of Presidents of
Major American Jewish
Organizations; Lord
Fisher, president of the
Board of Deputies of
British Jews; and Baron
Guy de Rothschild of
France.
Goldmann said that
Rabin lacked knowledge
only of technical contacts
with Egyptians to agree
to a date. He said the WJC
delegation would go to Is-
rael for consultations be-
fore proceeding to Egypt.

no full, overall peace,
there should be no pay-
ment." He said he ex-
pected a difficult year
i the
ahead for Israel in
political sphere. But he
was optimistic that there
is, for the first time, a real
chance for a Middle East
settlement.
It was reported in Bonn
that West German
Foreign Minister Hans-
Dietrich Genscher is
launching a major bid to
involve Western Europe
in the search for a
Mideast peace solution. .
In the last week of 1976
Genscher surprised polit-
ieal observers by unex-
pectedly calling separate
talks with the ambas-
sadors of Israel, Saudi
Arabia, Jordan, Egypt
and Syria.

He also announced he
would visit Damascus and
Amman in February, and
Israel later. Government
sources hinted that
Genscher would unveil
suggestions for a positive
Mideast peace role for the
European Economic
Community (EEC) when
the Community's minis-
ters meet in London this
month.
- The sources stressed
that any EEC contribu-
tion would have to be
made after prior consul-
tation — and in coordina-
tion — with the U.S. gov-
ernment.

Abie Nathan's F eace Ship
Crosses Suez Canal Freely
TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Abie Nathan's peace ship
arrived at Eilat Tuesday
after crossing the Suez
Canal: It was Nathan's
sixth attempt to use the
waterway and the Egyp-
tian authorities finally
gave permission.
The 400-ton former
Dutch coaster which flies
the Panamanian flag was
escorted through the
canal by Egyptian war-
ships, butwas otherwise
undisturbed.
e Egyptians did not
mit Nathan to dis-
tribute candy and flowers
to the children of Port
Said at the Mediterra-
nean entrance of the
canal. He gave these out
instead to the youngsters
of Eilat who joined Mayor
G. Katz, town council
members and citizens of
Eilat in an enthusiastic
welcome for the peace
shop.
Nathan told newsmen
that permission to use the
canal represented a per-
sonal visiting card of
Egyptian President
Anwar Sadat that would
gain him admittance to any
Arab state.
Nathan cabled King
Hussein of Jordan, for
permission to take his
ship to the Port of Aqaba
adjoining Eilat. He also
said he planned to make a
peace flight to Damascus
as . he did to Egypt twice
after the Six-Day War. On
both those occasions,
Nathan was uncere-
moneously expelled, but
he is convinced that the
climate has changed.
He said he planned to
sail back to the Mediter-
ranean via the Suez
Canal this week and re-
sume his peace broad-
casts to the Middle East
from International
waters. While Nathan's
trip through the Suez
Canal may have been a
personal triumph it set no
political precedent.
Third-flag ships plying to
and from Israel have
been permitted to use the
canal _under terms of the
1974 second Sinai agree-
ment between Israel and
Egypt. Israel-Flag ships
are still barred.
