Falaguera Book

NEW YORK — A young
student's search for the
most satisfying way of
life, written in 1265 by the
poet, physician and
philosopher Rabbi Shem
Tov ben Yosef ibn
Falaquera of Spain, has
been translated by Dr. M.
Herschel Levine and pub-
lished by Yeshiva Uni-
versity Press.
The book, "Sefer Ha-
Mevakesh," or "Book of
the Seeker," according to
Dr. Levine, reveals Arab
and Jewish influences on
the adventure-type
novel.
Dr. Levine, professor of
English at Eastern Con-
necticut State College,
says the ancient work "is
a model for those works of
fiction in which the hero-
encounters a -variety of
characters, such as in the
novel 'Huckleberry
Finn.' "
