Denise Thal, the Hun- tington Woods student who became one of the first women winners of the Rhodes scholarship prize, comes from. a fam- ily actively involved in Jewish communal causes. A graduate of Berkley High School and an eco- nomics major at Harvard, Miss Thal was confirmed at Temple Israel where she was active in the temple's Michigan State Temple Youth chapter. She attended Fresh Air Society camps and later was a counselor at Camp Agree. On campus, she participates in the Bnai Brith Hillel Foundation's activities. Miss Thal was a National Merit Scholar at Berkley and treasurer of the stu- dent council. She made headlines at age 16 when a Federal court ruled she could play Berkley's boys' tennis team. She captained the team as a senior and was captain of the women's tennis team at Radcliffe. "I went out of my way to shake hands with the Egyptian players and the Moroccan players," Barry said of the two Arab nations competing.
