Jewish Protest Spurs Change
in Oxford Dictionary 'Insults'

LONDON — Marcus
Shloimovitz has won a
victory of sorts in his bat-
tle to have changed offen-
sive definitions of words
relating to Je-ws in the
Oxford English Dictio-
nary.
Shloimovitz failed in
the High Court to stop the
Oxford dictionaries' pub-
lishers from continuing to
use definitions of the
word Jew" which he de-
scribed as "scurrilous."
The publishers have since
...ted "A Supplement to
Oxford English Dic-
tionary." The supplement
still includes the derogat-
ory definitions, but in-
cludes with them qualify-
ing notices as opposed to
the normal practice of de-
scribing words without
editorial remarks.
For example, the refer-
ence "Jewboy, girl, man"
is followed, by the com-
ment: "Such expressions
now mainly in offensive
use but not originally op-
probrious."
R.W. Burchfield, editor
of the OED, explains in
the preface to the sup-
plement:
"Offensiveness to a
particular group, minor-
ity or otherwise, is unac-
ceptable as the sole
ground for the exclusion
of any word or class of
words from the OED. It is
therefore desirable to
enter new racial and reli-
gious terms however op-
probrious they may seem
to those to whom they are
applied.
"It is also desirable that
the somewhat antiquated
historical record of words
like Jesuit, Jew, Negro,

nigger should be brought

Burchfield also said
that he and his colleagues
do not Personally approve
of all the words and
phrases included.
"Nevertheless, in our
function as `marshallers
of words,' we have set
them all down as objec-
tively as possible to form
a permanent record of the
language of our time.
