THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Jewish communal and civic leader Dorothy M. Karbel died Dec. 13 at age 67. Born in Freeland, Mrs. Karbel lived most of her life in Detroit. She was a past president of the Wo- men's Division of the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion, a former vice presi- dent of the Jewish Com- munity Center, a member of Temple Beth El and its sisterhood, National Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah and Bnai F-ith. , also was a former ic president and member of the board of the Children's Center of Wayne County and a former vice president and member of the board of the Traveler's Aid Society and a board member of the Women's Division of the United Foundation. Mrs. Karbel leaves her husband, Sidney J.; a son, Robert A.; a daughter, Mrs. Alan M. (Lois) Fern of Chevy Chase, Md.; a brother, David S. Touff of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Mrs. David (Mar- ion) Handleman; and two grandchildren. Abraham Glasser, Law School Prof NEW YORK — Ab- raham Glasser, who re- signed in 1953 as a profes- sor at Rutgers Law School in Newark after refusing the year before to tell a House Un- American Activities Committee about possible Communist ties, died Dec. 12 at age 61. Mr. Glasser, who at- tended Rutgers and Princeton Universities, was an assistant profes- sor at Rutgers in 1953 when he was suspended by the university, which later that year filed for- mal charges against him for refusing to tell the committee whether he was a Communist. The suspension, in March 1953, was made ef- fective a day after he had sworn to the committee that he was not "now an actual card-carrying, of- ficial member of the Communist Party." However, he had de- clined to tell the commit- tee whether he had been a Communist in the past. Abe Goldberg, 83 Abe Goldberg, former owner of Mack Avenue Auto Supply, died Dec. 11 at age 83. Born in Poland, Mr. Go - f.,rg operated his /supply company in 1920 to 1936. He ac- tilfely promoted Van Auken bumper guards in the 1930s through the 1950s. He was a scoutmaster and active in the Boy Scout movement. Mr. Goldjerg leaves his wife, Esther; a son, Paul; a daughter, Mrs. Meyer (Gertrude) Jacobstein; three sisters, Mrs. Isa- dore (Mollie) Steiner of Ypsilanti, Mrs. Herman (Rose) Aberly and Mrs. Joe (Bella) Indianer of Miami, Fla.; three grand- children and two great- grandchildren._ Shelby Langwald Marvin Shelby Langwald, former city of Detroit health inspector and real estate agent, died Dec. 11 at age 42. Mr. Langwald was a food inspector for the De- troit Board of Health for 20 years before taking a job three years ago as a real estate agent with the Penn Realty Co. He was a member of the South Oakland County Board of Realtors, Tem- ple Kol Ami, Adat Shalom Synagogue and Perfec- tion Lodge of the Masons. A Korean veteran, Mr. Langwald served in the U.S. Army for two years. He resided at 6651 Cot- tonwood Ct., West Bloom- field. He is survived by his wife, Annette; two sons, Andrew and Michael; a daughter, Sheri; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Philip (Gladys) Langwald. Henry Goldsmid, Bank Chairman LONDON (JTA) — Sir Henry d'Avigdor Gold- smid, chairman of the Bank Leumi in Britain, died recently at age 6 7 . A leading Jewish member of the English aristocracy, he held many other positions in Jewish and non-Jewish life. He was president of the Jewish Colonization As- sociation and a former chairman of the Anglo- Israel Chamber of Com- merce. A respected member of the Conservative Party, he was MP for Walsall South from 1955 to 1974, and for two years served as Par- liamentary private secre- tary to the Housing Minis- ter, Duncan Sandys, now Lord Duncan-Sandys. Sir Henry, a bullion broker, was a great- grandson of Count Henry d'Avigdor, one of Napoleon III's nobles. He was a member of the firm of Mocatta and Goldsmid, founded in the 17th Cen- tury.
