A Slight Mixup
During the festival of
Hanuka, a young lady of
Tel Aviv visited a
cooperative colony in the
Emek. Her face, gener-
ously covered with rouge,
lipstick, mascara and
powder, was an unusual
sight in this workers' set-
tlement.
A bright native child of
six, staring in bewilder-
ment at the strange face
masked by the cosmetic
make-up, turned to his
mother and asked:
"Why is it that today,
when we observe Hanuka
in Tel Aviv they celebrate
Purim?"

24 Shomrim Assure Mortgage
Redemption for Shaarey Zedek;
115th Anniversary Is Marked
With
fifth-generation
decendants of the found-
ers and builders of the
synagogue in attendance,
Cong. Shaarey Zedek im-
pressively observed its
115th anniversary at a
dinner in the synagogue
social hall, Sunday eve-
ning.
The 700 in attendance
were especially elated to
learn that 24 of the
synagogue members had
contributed a large
enough sum nearly to
wipe out the mortgage.
The group was honored
with the title "Shomrim"
— the guardians — and
their labors were
applauded in the ad-
dresses of Rabbi Irwin
Groner and the leaders of
the congregation.
Mandell Berman was
toastmaster and the prin-
cipal address was by Dr.
Louis Finkelstein, chan-
cellor emeritus of the
Jewish Theological Semi-
nary.
A noteworthy mark of
continuity in congrega-
tional leadership was in
evidence in the participa-
tion of the Shaarey Zedek
father-son team of Louis,
Berry, who was chairman
of the building committee
which supervised the
construction of the pre-
sent synagogue building,
and his son Harold Berry,
who is currently presi-
dent of the synagogue.
Both their addresses
emphasized the deep fam-
ily devotion to Shaarey .
Zedek and their elation
over the roles a father
and a son share in ad-
vancing the spiritual-
cultural needs of one of
the nation's leading Con-
servative congregations.
Walter L. Field spoke
for the "Shomrim," the
benefactors he organized
and chaired, and he read
a poem he had written to
commemorate the occa-
sion.
Dr. Finkelstein recalled
his role in many Shaarey
Zedek functions and he
paid honor to the rabbis
who served the
A Quiz for Hanuka

What special foods are
traditional for consump-
tion on Hanuka?
Technically, it is gener-
ally assumed that
Hanuka is not one of
those holidays which is
celebrated by a feast or a
meal because the miracle
of survival was that of the
spiritual survival of the
people initially, whereas
in the festival of Purim,
for example, the threat
was to the physical survi-
val of the people. Never-
theless, many folk-
customs developed where
certain foods became tra-

that very time his chains
were unhooked and thus
his freedom had begun.
The fact that this hap-
pened on Hanuka made it
especially significant. In-
carceration in those days
sometimes meant eternal
imprisonment and re-
lease from prison was
considered a varitable
miracle.
The combination of the

the miraculous release of

Rabies Scare

that any dogs and cats
wandering around will be
destroyed. Foxes and
other suspected rabies
carriers will also be de-
stroyed.
The action cam

about 50 persons were in-
oculated in Jerusalem
last week after being bit-
ten by dogs. Normally
only one or two persons a
month get anti-rabies
shots in the capital.
An official of the Health
Ministry's district office
here said that 26 of the
inoculated persons were
bitten by one rabid dog
which was caught and

A Woeful Plight
Berel: I'm in a frightful
predicament. I don't
know how I can fulfill the
duty of eating latkes On
Hanuka. If I eat less than
five latkes, they will not
satisfy me. If I eat five or
more latkes, I'll be a glut-
ton. What would you ad-
vise me to do? Please help
me out of this terrible
plight.
Shmerel: There is in-
deed a simple solution.
Make one latke as big as
five latkes.
