The camp inmates were engaged in renovating an adjacent 800-year-old castle, the "Wewelsburg," for use as an SS center and as a re- sidence of Heinrich Him- mler. Many were hanged, shot or tortured to death. From 1964 to 1973 a memorial plaque pro- vided by the "Association of Victims of the Nazi Re- gime" was placed in the inner courtyard of the castle, commemorating "victims of the Hitler dic- tatorship in the Wewelsburg concentra- tion camp." In 1973, the local au- thorities controlled by Germany's conservative opposition Christian Democrat Party (CDU), removed the tablet on the grounds that it was "his- torically inaccurate," the prisoners having died not in the castle but in the now demolished camp below. ' Observers believe, however, that the real reason was that Wewelsburg had been converted into a youth hostel and local history 95 CHINESE VILLAGE INN Formerly of Livernois and 7 Mile Rd. The CDU, they speculate, did not want local and overseas visitors to be reminded of the killings. In October the CDU local council rejected a call by the Social Demo- cratic Party, which rules in Bonn with the Liberal Party, for the plaque to be reinstated. Last month the SPD again presented a resolu- tion calling for a memo- rial plaque. Meanwhile, Israelis are concerned about the re- surgence of neo-Nazism in West Germany and are critical of German Jews and the West German Zionist Federation for al- leged apathy in face of the threat. MK Hillel Seidel of the Independent Liberal Party, a survivor of the Holocaust, denounced the indifference of German Jews to the revival of the Nazi government. He cited last week's in- cident in Munich where anti-Nazi activist Serge Klarsfeld was beaten up at a Nazi rally and he and his wife Beate were forci- bly ejected. No German Jews took part in the Klarsfeld's anti-Nazi demonstration and none came to their aid, Seidel said. Meanwhile, supporters of the Public Committee to Fight Nazi Criminals, headed by the Klarsfelds, have cabled World Jewish Congress President Nahum Goldmann to intervene with West German authorities. They want him to urge action against meetings of the neo-Nazi parties in Germany and reunions of former members of the SS and other Nazi groups. Jewish- Mayors Elected in Ontario TORONTO (JTA) — Jewish mayors were elected in several major Canadian cities in the municipal elections this month in the province of Ontario. - Lorrie Greenberg was elected mayor of Ottawa, Canada's capital, by an overwhelming vote of 84 percent. In North York; a borough of more than 400,000 residents within Metropolitan Toronto, Mel Lastman was re- elected mayor. • He polled 80,000 votes to his oppo- nent's 20,000. Philip White was re- elected mayor of York Borough. In Mississauga, a large suburb west of To- ronto, Dr. Martin Dobkin failed to win re-election. The city of Kitchener now also has a Jewish mayor, Morley Rosenberg. Numerous Jewish al- dermen, school trustees and some controllers were also elected in the Toronto area and elsewhere in Ontario.
