AT 12 MILE & FRANKLIN IN FRANKLIN SHOPPING PLAZA 357-3280 NEW YORK (JTA) — A survivor of the Nazi Holocaust expressed sor- row at the fact that this awesome event is becom- ing an "uncomfortable" subject in the Jewish community. In fact, Sigmund Strochlitz, vice president of the American Friends of Haifa University, stated that the Holocaust "should serve as a remin- der that it can happen again is being pushed away and ignored even by our own leaders. Sub- ' sequent developments — Hiroshima, Korea, Viet- nam and the fact that our own people are sup- posedly tired of what happened to their par- ents, grandparents or great-grandparents — is being used as a reason and maybe as an excuse." Strochlitz made this observation at the 70th anniversary celebration of Cong. Machzeh Av- raham last week. The meeting also honored Strochlitz for his work and contributions to the congregation, the oldest World Jewish Congress Makes No Excuses for Spain Meeting PARIS (JTA) — The World Jewish Congress here issued a statement last Friday in reply to Is- raeli Foreign Minister Yigal Allon's declaration in the Knesset last week Introducing a New Restaurant $ served at 4 65 your table SAIL INN ALL YOU CAN EAT ORDER ONE OR ALL EVERYDAY DINNER MENU — IN ADDITION: MON.-THURS. The WJC re- sponse stated: "When the Jewish community of Spain in- vited the European branch of the WJC to hold its meeting in Madrid — a fact which had been widely publicized in the whole Jewish and non- Jewish world the Spanish government had agreed to welcome the de- legates and the King had expressed his willingness to receive a Congress de- legation. "Due apparently to Arab pressure, the par- ticipation of the Deputy Minister of Justice and President of the Inter- Ministerial Commission on Religious Liberty at the meeting was cancel- led a few hours before the opening. The World Jewish Congress thereupon withdrew its request for an audience with King Juan Carlos I, in order to spare him em- barrassment. people as the man who wiped out an entire Jewish village in Latvia," Strochlitz was referring to Boleslays Maikovskis, a Mineola, Long Island resident. That lawyer, he added, considered the attempt to deport the ex-Nazi a crime and the innocent people that he killed, the guilty ones. Reaction such as this is the reason why the Holocaust sur- vivors "have the sacred obligation" to make sure that the horror will never be forgotten or distorted, Strochlitz declared. Strochlitz, who was an inmate at Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen concentra- tion camps during the war and is now a resident of New London, Conn., said that talking about the Holocaust has become taboo. "Somehow I have a feel- ing that a conspiracy of si- lence threatens to make the destruction of our people's past history a subject reserved only for psychologists," he said. He related how distres- sed he was several weeks ago while - watching a television program dur- ing which a Jewish lawyer from Long Island "vigorously objected, to- gether with his neighbors, to an attempt to deport a Nazi mur- derer from the United States, a murderer who was recognized by many 4 the World Jewish Con- gress are free to decide on their meeting places, whereas Mr. Allon's statement seems to imply that the WJC has to get ag- reement by the govern- ment of Israel for any such decision." in Meanwhile Jerusalem, Knesset member Yitzhak Navon, chairman of the Zionist General Council, viewed Spain's "cold shoulder" to the World Jewish Con- gress as a Spanish failure to foresee the magnitude of Arab protests to any ,friendly Spanish gestures to the WJC.
