CURRENT HISTORY: The younger generation of
Jews in this country, conscious of its Jewishness but
having little or no knowledge of what Jewish life is like
in other countries, except in Israel — and to a certain
extent in Soviet Russia — is beginning to display a
special interest in current Jewish life everywhere in
the world.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency with its net of
offices and correspondents in various countries of the
world covers the Jewish scene everywhere. However,
the JTA coverage of Jewish news only stimulates
young American Jews to seek all-embracing knowl-
edge of the "inside of Jewish living" in communities
outside of the United States, presented against the
background of the not-too-distant Jewish past, vivid
descriptions of personalities and problems of the pre-
sent, and the challenges for the future.
The American Jewish Committee has now un-
dertaken the task of bridging this gap in current
Jewish history through its new magazine "Present
Tense." The magazine carries excellent articles on
Jewish life in various countries, written by persons
living in these countries or visiting them for special
study purposes. The magazine also carries in-depth
articles on Jewish institutions in this country which
have an impact on Jewish life.
INSIDE WORLD JEWRY: I was especially im-
pressed with the latest issue of "Present Tense." Much
has been written during the years on Jews in Biro-
Bidj an, the remote "Jewish region" in Siberia where
the Soviet government has unsuccessfully attempted
to settle Soviet Jews for the last 50 years. But nothing
reflected the present Jewish life in Biro-Bidjan as viv-
idly as the eye-witness account by Alex Axelbak, an
American correspbndent in Moscow, who succeeded in
making a trip to Biro-Bidjan after prodding the Soviet
authorities for eight months to permit him to visit this
"Jewish autonomous region." It is like penetrating
into "forbidden territory."
The article brings the very latest information on
the meager Jewish life there where Jews constitute
less than 9 percent of the total population in the re-
gion, numbering some 12,000 souls, as compared with
the 30,000 who lived there in 1948.
There also are two fascinating articles on the pre-
sent life of British Jewry which throw light on Jewish
moods in the country, on relations between Jewish and
non-Jewish members of the British Parliament, on the
role which Jewish scientists play in England and how
they feel toward their Jewishness. One also finds in
the magazine a very interesting article on the Jews in
Syria, written by a senior international editor of the
Wall Street Journal who visited Syria three times
since May this year. There also is a very informative
and well-written article on Jewish living today in Swe-
den, and — of course — an in-depth article on Israel
with the accent on the "dove" movement there.
The American scene is also well represented in the
magazine.
"Present Tense" also carries short stories, poetry
and book reviews. It is intellectually challenging, emo-
tionally satisfying and esthetically enjoyable. Its
editor is Murray Polner; executive editor is Hanna F.
Desser.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
first three F-15 Eagle jet
interceptors of 25 ordered
by Israel from the U.S.
landed at an Air Force
base Dec. 12 to an unpre-
cedented public welcome.
Ordinarily, the delivery
of new weapons is cloaked
in secrecy.

But this time, some
3,000 invited guests and
dignitaries were on hand,
headed by Premier Yit-
zhak Rabin, Chief of Staff
Gen. Mordechai Gur and
Air Force Commander
Gen. Benjamin Peled.

The aircraft, which
have an effective range of
5,000 kilomerers, a ceiling
of 67,000 feet and super-
sonic speeds in excess of
Mach 2.5, flew to Israel
directly from their man-
ufacturer, the
McDonnell-Douglas Corp.
in St. Louis, Mo.
