THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Reform Leaders Urged to Fight for Recognition, Rights in Israel C LOS ANGELES, CAL. — Reform Jewish leaders in the United States and Canada were told that they must continue to fight "vigorously and stubbornly" for the full religious rights and rec- ognition in Israel. Rabbi Alexander M. Schindler, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, reported to the members of the board of trustees that the movement in Is- rael has "made good pro- ress and our acceptance -..as increased considera- bly. However, the prob- lem of our equal rights continues to vex us." He urged the Reform movement "to assert more persistently for equal rights for religious observance, recognition for Reform rabbis and full support for the move- ment's 15 Israeli congre- gations so that they can receive the same sub- sidies now granted by the Ministry of Religion to Orthodox congreations." Furtherinore, he stressed, "We want those whom we accept into Judaism here to be ac- cepted as full Jews when they come on aliya to Is- rael." Rabbi Schindler told the UAHC board mem- bers that at the meeting two weeks ago in $ Terusalem of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, Prime Minister Rabin advised the gathering to "fight, fight with every resource at your command and you will win." Rabbi Schindler also challenged the previous excuses regarding recog- nition made by other Is- raeli prime ministers — Ben-Gurion, Levi Eshkol and Golda Meir, that if a sufficient number of Diaspora Reform Jews would settle in the coun- try they would soon re- ceive their rights. - "I bitterly resent the no- tion that rights are to be measured in accordance with numeric strength and that justice is dependent on political clout." Rabbi Schindler as- sured Israeli leaders that while Reform Jews "pur- sue our struggles for equal rights, we will not slacken in our support for Israel. We will not di- minish our financial help or reduce our political support."
