THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Chinese Economics Expert Dr. Alexander Eckstein Dies Dr. Alexander Ecks- tein, a leading expert and a pioneer in the field of the economics of China and the director of the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan died Dec. 4 at age 61. Born in Yugoslavia, Dr. Eckstein was graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1939, earned his master's degree in 1941 and his doctorate in 1952. Before his appointment to the Michigan faculty, Dr. Eckstein lectured at Harvard University and was a professor at the University of Rochester. He was a founder of the National Committee on United States-China Rela- tions, and served as its chairman from 1970 until November 1972. He had been a professor of eco- nomics at Michigan since 1961. In April 1972, during Dr. Eckstein's term as chairman, the committee co-sponsored with the United States Table- Tennis Association a two-week visit to this country by the Chinese table-tennis team. A graduate of Wayne Lillian Chernick Lillian Chernick, a member of local Jewish communal organizations, died Dec. 7 at age 69. Born in Toronto, On- tario, Canada, she was a member of Cong.
