the historical signifi-
cance and with a special
meaning perhaps to the
world of today.
The world faces an oil
shortage. The Hanuka
latke recalls the story of
such a shortage. When
Judas Maccabeus entered
the Temple after defeating
the Syrian General
Antiochus, there was oil
enough there for only one
day but it miracuously
lasted for a week. How
could one better celebrate
that 'than by eating latkes?
They liked them so much
that now latkes are com-
mon at all times of the
year.
The Maccabean victory
had consequences for the
entire world — but only to
the Jews. -
Today the world has an
oil problem again.
Israel cannot supply
the oil, yet the fact seems
to be that Israel is help-
ing to keep the price of oil
lower.
Recently the Associated
Press reported on a meet-
ing of 10 of the Arab oil
nations in Kuwait. The
dispatch quotes -a member
of the group warning the
others to be moderate in
raising the oil price. He
warned that if they raised
the price too much, they
would be doing exactly
"what the Zionists want
them to do."
In other words, they
fear that a large increase
in the price of oil would
benefit Israel, and not
wanting that, they are
forced not to raise the
price too much.
So Israel is helping
keep the price of oil down
to some extent. So I think
the whole world should
begin to eat 19,tkes.
Eli Evans, a Southern
Jewish writer, recently
noted that Jimmy Car-
ter's support of Israel
stems from his Baptist
belief in the Bible.
This recalls a little inci-
dent that happened at the
time of the Balfour Decla-
ration. A small group of
English Jews opposed
Zionism and the Balfour
Declaration. Lloyd
George, who was them
Prime Minister, asked
them to have breakfast
with him.
They came, had their
toast and tea and Lloyd
