Reader Recalls Center History Editor, The Jewish News: Your resume of the 1900 of the Hannah Schloss Building updated to the dedication of the new Maple Road Center, was nostalgic. Doubly so, because of the Fresh Air Reunion banquet re- cently, when they asked for old pictures and old recollections. When I was 12 years old my mother took me to Blanche Hart because I was an intro- vert. Blanche enrolled me in the campfire and drama groups, and I blos- somed into an extrovert. She also arranged for me to go to Venice Beach of the camp. Subsequently when my family lived on Holbrook Avenue, I was a steady "customer" at the Wood- ward and Holbrook Center. It was there that Mary Caplan organized her first Mothers' Club. When she passed away at a ripe age, I wished that on her tombstone would appear the words "She took the Jewish house- wife out of the kitchen." I believe there is no- body who can't find some appealing activity or pro- gram at the 10 Mile or Maple Centers. The choice is infinite. I cer- tainly participate. My two grandchildren are members and participate. Mrs. Eve Dishell NATIONALLY ADVERTISED PRODUCTS AT LOW, LOW EVERYDAY PRICES! Indeed, we all have many things to be grate- ful for. America is still the most free, most prosper- ous and most generous nation on earth. Her citi- zens provide and are pro- vided with the highest conveniences at the low- est costs and are con- fronted with the least problems both at work and at play. We are truly a blessed land and a bles- sed people. This year we celebrated an event that took place 200 years ago and where are we today! The cores of our cities are rotting and crime is rising at incal- culable rates. Corruption has pervaded every layer of our society and we are becoming increasingly beseiged with the pangs of bureaucratic inep- titude. A Bicentennial celebra- tion must not only be con- cerned with the past and present but with the future as well. The festivities might be over but there is still time for the Bicen- tennial reevaluation, reunification and rejuve- nation that we so desper- ately need. The task is neither clear nor easy and each step may initiate another obstacle. Yet, it is time to realize that the party is over. Let's get down to work. As parents of children in the United Hebrew Schools' elemen- tary and high school we have seen an encourag- ing rise in staff morale and teaching excellence. A spirit of scholarship prevades the entire sys- tem. After the turbulence of the past years the United Hebrew Schools, under Dr. Stern, is again becom- ing a source of pride to the Jewish community. Simson and Sue Sendler * * * Editor, The Jewish News: The Woman's Auxiliary of the United Hebrew Schools congratulates Dr. Jay Stern on his ap- pointment to serve with an international group of Jewish educators meet- ing in Jerusalem under the sponsorship of the Hebrew University, the Jewish Theological Semi- nary of America and the World Zionist Organiza- tion. Dr. Stern is to be com- mended for having au- thored the first major re- vision in the curriculum for the American after- noon Jewish school in 20 years. We who believe in the upgrading of Jewish edu- cation are privileged to work with a man of his caliber and stature, and his international reputa- tion as an educator brings distinction to the Jewish community of metropoli- tan Detroit. They are not pioneer minded. One shudders from the consequences of the en- tire, God forbid, structure collapsing under the weight of the above men- tioned horrible hard- ships. In addition [there are] the many billions of dol- lars for arms, to deter surprise attacks. It runs into astronomical figures. The Arabs, with their saber-rattling, are not in a better position. They have tried every conceivable method to defeat Israel. However, a methodical way must be found soon [to Stop the Arabs]. all sales final The Arabs claim as legitimate ownership of some parts, - which Israel victoriously vanquished in the four wars.
