New York Inmates
Eat Kosher Meals
NEW YORK (JTA) —
New York State agencies
make special arrange-
ments for patients in
state mental hospitals
and inmates in state pris-
ons _ who ask for kosher
diets but many more hos-
pital patients than con-
victs make such requests,
according to Menachem
M. Shayovich, special as-
sistant to Gov. Hugh
Carey.
Shayovich reported on
the arrangements for
mental hospital patients
at therequest of Dr. Ber-
nard Fryshman, chair-
man of the commission on
legislation and civic ac-
tion of Agudath Israel of
America. Dr! - Fryshman
had requested clarifica-
tion from the governor's
office and from Dr. Lawr-
ence Kolb, Commissioner
of Mental Hygiene, about
arrangements for pa-
tients in state mental
health institutions who
want kosher diets.
Shayovich also re-
ported that a Passover
diet is provided for pa-
tients for the eigh,; days
of Passover and that a
"full Seder dinner is
served the night when
the rabbi conducts the
Seder service. Special ar-
rangements also are
made for patients who
wish to fast on Yom Kip-
pur."
Rabbi Advocates
Larger Families
PHILADELPHIA
(JTA) — Another Jewish
scholar has proposed that
every Jewish couple have
three to four children to
preserve the Jewish
group with the comment
that the Jewish people
has already made its con-
tribution to zero popula-
tion growth .through the
Holocaust.
The proposal was made
by Rabbi Robert Gordis,
who also called for the
creation in America of a
"voluntary community
dedicated to an organic
view of Judaism to arrest
the decay of the Jewish
heritage." Dr. Gordis,
professor of Bible at
the Jewish Tfieological
Seminary, presented
those observations in giv-
ing the Herbert A. Abeles
memorial address at the
45th General Assembly of
the Council of Jewish
Federations and Welfare
Funds.
The
Conservative
scholar said American
Jews must give top prior-
ity to Jewish education
and to encouraging
Jewish couples to have
larger families.
