The universal admira-
tion aroused by the dar-
ing and unprecedented
exploit of the Israel De-
fense Forces through
"Operation Jonathan," in
which Israeli hostages
hijacked in an Air France
plane were rescued from
Entebbe, sparked off a
wave of volunteering
throughout the Jewish
World.
However, in Israel, it
resulted in the contribu-
tion of many millions of
pounds by all sections of
the population to the Is-
rael 'Defense Fund. Much
has already been written
about the scores of Bar
Mitzva boys who
willingly gave up the
pleasures of a costly ban-
quet in order to contrib-
ute the money to the
Fund, or of the woman on
her death-bed who sum-
moned an official of the
Israel Ministry of De-
fense in order to contrib-
ute her life's savings to
the cause. Contributions
have been pouring in
daily, from people in all
classes.
Little, however, has so
far been told about the
donations that are being
sent by new immigrant
associations and by indi-
viduals who have re-
cently arrived to the
country and who regard
their contributions as a
means of identifying
.• themselves more closely
with their homeland. As
many of them have put in
their accompanying let-
ters, they regard such
contributions as a means
of speeding up their in-
tegration into Israeli so-,
ciety.
Hundreds of letters
from individuals and
groups are being received
daily, in broken Hebrew or
in other languages, some
heart-rendering. Take for
example the letter of a new
immigrant who was re-
cently admitted to a kibutz
somewhere in Israel.
"Members of kibutzim
do not have resources of
their own. But a year
without vacation can
surely do no harm to
anybody. To go without
new clothing for a year
will not leave one naked;
and as for a year without
new shoes, as the saying
goes, only cobblers go
barefoot. Enclosed there-
fore, you will find my
modest personal con-
tribution. It comes from
my own pocket money
and is not sent through
the kibutz treasurer."
How many people have
heard of the "Chinese
Settlers Association in
Israel"? Were it not for a
contribution received by
this body, very few people
would have been aware
that among the immi-
grants arriving from over
70 countries to Israel,
during the 28 years of the
state's existence there
were Jews, mostly of Rus-
sian parentage, who came
from China.
The Chilean Immi-
grant's Association has a
membership of barely two
score in Israel but it has
contributed the sum of IL
9,500 ($1,100) to the Fund.

Other associations with
larger memberships have
sent in sums running into
six figures.
One new immigrant
who is still living in an
Absorption Center wrote:
"As a woman receiving a
small pension and too old
to work. I cannot contrib-
ute a large sum. Will you
accept several post-dated
checks?"
Numerous letters have
been received by the
Fund from new immi-
grant children. The let-
ters are adorned with
drawings of all kinds, and
are accompanied by sums
deducted from their poc-
ket money. Many young
people in the Youth
Aliya movement have
also sent ir. contributions.
Some of them are doing
all sorts of chores and
contributing their earn-
ings.
"The amount of con-
tributions received from
new immigrants almost
matches the sums con-
tributed by more well-
founded sections of the
community" a Fund offi-
cial told me. "So far, over
one quarter of a million
pounds has been contrib-
uted by recent arrivals in
all parts of the country."
This primary act of iden-
tification points to
healthy adjustment, con-
viction and pride.
